Anyone know about CDs?

Hoping one of you boffins out there can answer this one. When you put a CD in to a PC and you are on the net the tracks get named by a database at cddb(or something like that).
How does the site recognise the CD? There are two theories so far neither of which may be correct.
First is that there is a unique code on the disc the site recognises and then names it accordingly.
Second is the site recognises the number of tracks, lengths of tracks, order etc and this series of variables is used to recognise it.

Which is it or what is the real answer, anyone know?

There's a checksum made from the number of tracks and their length in frames IIRC.
