Anyone been to Langkawi?

The B. family are going to Australia in October and fancy a week in Langkawi on the way back to break up the journey.
Any of the PH clan ever been there? Any recomendations on where to stay?
Also where to stay in Perth W.A would be nice.

Was there a couple of years ago. Nice island.
Have a look at www.travelmood.co.uk - they have a fair selection.
We were at Berjaya beach - stayed in stilted cabins and got woken up by monkeys on the terrace several mornings. Very chill.

No idea, but me Mum & Dad are there at the moment, they come back on Sunday.

Hopefully taken some piccies as they borrowed my camera. I'll see what they say about the place if you want & post some piccies, abit different from there usuall holidays of Centre Parcs.

My dad spent a few weeks there & loved it. I know which hotel he stayed it but he said he would go back & he's a fussy sod.

We went there, it was a good place. I cant remember the hotels we were in, but i do remember that they had an international go-kart track! It was so good.

As you fly in it is literally 200m from the runway, you can see it as you land. It is an absolute must.

It was called the "Morack internation raceway" or something.

Not been to Lamgawi went to Penang which is the next island down. However did go to the coral just off Langkawi which is nice.

Been to Perth but stayed with a friend so no information on hotels! However things to do: -

Wave Rock
Pinnacles
Drive down to the southern corner of Australia and see Albany and The Great Tree Walk
Gold Mines if you have time
Freemantle Prison
Whales if time of year right
The Old Mint
etc

Langkawi is alright, and the Berjaya beach resort is definitely the one to go to if you're after a nice experience.

Langkawi also has the distinction of being one of only two islands in the country that are tax free, which basically means ridiculously cheap booze. There are loads of duty-free shops in the main town selling more alcohol than you can shake a stick at.

Also look beyond the typical tourist trail for more interesting off-island excursions, like eagle feeding and cave exploration.

If you are after the idyllic perfect-beach scenario with white sand, crystal water and coral reefs then you'd be best looking elsewhere. Redang, Lang Tengah and Pangkor are all great places if you stay in the upmarket resorts (who normally have the best beaches). They are not as convinient as Langkawi, lacking an international airport, but if you really are interested in a chill out then it's definitely worth the detour.

Myself and Mrs wedgepilot were island hopping in the region a few years ago, and Langkawi was one of the stops. Lovely place, and plenty of duty free like deadlock says.

We went trekking to the lake at Pulau Dayang Bunting, which is well worth a look if you don't mind a bit of exercise. Don't let your missus near the lake though

i went a few years back and stayed at The Datai.

Prob. one of the best hotels ive ever stayed in! Villas perched in the tropical rainforest, very relaxing and as with most things in this part of the world, service really is fantastic.

Not many young kids, prob geared up for couples, older families etc

Yep, I went there a few years back too, fantastic place, right in/on the rainforest. The beach was almost totally deserted each day, really quiet place to chill out and luxuriate....
