Right chaps
I am planning a trip to Barcelona with my better half in September. I have no real idea what the place is about, or how it is arranged, so I thought I would pick your collective brains.
I would like to be able to check out some of the architecture (apparently quite nice), be able to look around some decent shops, maybe visit the beach, and a bonus would be a Hotel with a pool on the roof.
Anyone know what sort of area I should be looking to stay, or have any Hotel Recommendations? (provide reasons if possible).

Hotel recommendation:
Duques de Bergara (a quick google will give you a million links to it) Just off the Playa du Catalunia, at the end of Las Rambles. Fabulous hotel (well, it was when I went three years ago!) Art Deco styling, and great food (even if it was just breakfast we ate there)
Things to do/see:
Street entertainment on Las Rambles is great fun, just keep an eye on your wallet/handbag
Architecture:
Blimy.... where do you start?!
Loads of Anton Gaudi's work to be seen, and loads of stuff inspired by Gaudi.
Would heartily recommend a visit to the Temple de la Sagrada Familia, even though it will probably never be finished, it is an awesome sight.
There will be plenty of other advice from PH'ers.... "What to do in Barcelona" has been a subject on here numerous times!

I’ve been living here (Barcelona) for the past 5 months on a contract so can probably give you some advice 
Things to see/do:
Las Ramblas / Place Catalunya – very touristy but worth seeing once
Port Vell – see the yachts and take a nice walk
Barcelonetta – charming side streets with lots of cafes
Barcelona Beach – not very pretty but a cool place to hang out
Port Olympic – again a bit touristy but lots of good bars and restaurants
Gaudi Cathedral (someone else already spelt the full name correctly)
Park Guell (Gaudi again)
Passage De Gracia – shopping
Place Espania – go in the evening and see the dancing water fountains set to lights and music
Park Mountjic (sp?) – lots of museums, fabulous views over the city and see the Olympic stadium
Mount Tibiado – in the hills behind Barcelona, take the funicular railway up there. More fabulous views, a beautiful cathedral and a theme park.
The Nou Camp – if football’s your thing go and see a game – any game – just to experience the stadium and say you’ve been there
Gracia district – where I live and where the locals go to get away from the tourists – apparently. Loads of great restaurants and cafes.
Eating out:
Posit - Port Olympic
Botafumerio – Passage Gran de Gracia (north of Diagonal)
El Pinto – in the gothic quarter next to Las Ramblas

Night life:
Placa Real – off Las Ramblas – loads of bars with tables outside
Avenue Aribau – about 5 of the best night clubs in town all next door to each other
Remember people eat out late here. A normal night out would be dinner at 10 pm, hit a bar around midnight and then (if you’re still up for it) hit a club at about 2-3 am. If you really want to round the night out leave the club at 6 am and go to a café until 9 am and then hit the beach and sleep if off

Did a small website for a friend who has a self catering apartment to rent in Barcelona, payment was an offer of a free long weekend over there but not managed to make it yet so cannot confirm any more info - however it has no pool and you may well be set on staying in a hotel with their inherent benefits.

I second everything that's already been said, but I would also recommend the AA "Citypack" guide to the city if you're only going to be there a short time.
It descibes the top 25 places to visit, has hotel and restaurant guides, map and tube map, is pocket sized, and proved invaluable when we drove down a couple of years ago.

Buy a 2 day ticket for the open top tourist busses. There are (4 IIRC) circular routes that join in a couple of places.
You can hop on/off almost anywhere as there's load of stops & they obviously take you to all of the attractions - and you get to see all of the city on the way there.
You also get a sheaff of discount vouchers for admitance to said attractions so the bus ends up costing you almost zilch.
We stayed in the "Gotico" (sp?)area, which is between La Ramblas & the port, so ideal location.
When visiting any of the Gaudi attractions get there 1st thing in the morning (<0900) unless you like queing!

Looks fantastic. However, as flush as I would like to think I am, £800/night is a little steep for me!!
