people are moaning about the amount the receive but while i sympathise with what theyve been through etc why should they be expecting anything at all? isnt that why people take out insurance?

That is a good point, it is not the British government that killed them but the terrorists.

It is what life insurance is for.

I think that is debatable, we are taking part in the war on terror, so we are officially (from our side) an enemy of the terrorists.

I do think it shows us up though, with Americans getting an average of £2 million each after 9/11 whereas the victims families in the UK of 7/7 are going to get a MAXIMUM of £500,000 for lost wages etc.

I take your point about it not being the govt's fault but surely they should take some responsability.

If indeed the life insurance policies do exclude terrorism then the government should step in to compensate the victims at an appropriate rate.

"But a spokesman for the Victims of Crime Trust say bereaved relatives should be given 100 times more because they would have to live with "tragedy" for the rest of their lives."

"Prisoners in jail have access to open-ended legal aid to pursue their claims and get true compensation, so why shouldn't the victims get true compensation?"

Where do they get these people from?

People die. It's a fact, and we can't avoid it. Sometimes people die before their time, and that is tragic, but how is it the states responsibility to pay out vast sums to the families of such people. Are these victims more deserving than those who die in road accidents, also through no fault of their own? How about those who die from industrial accidents, or illness?

The fact that they are getting money at all is laudable (the families will at least not have to worry about funeral expenses etc), but as the CICB spokesperson said, this can be no more than a gesture.

I don't get what he is trying to say about prisoners. They don't generally get 'compensation', but they are entitled to legal aid. This is only right, as economic status should not be a barrier to someone receiving legal advice.

Sorry if this sounds insensitive, but it really hacks me off when something happens and there is this instant expectation that money should be given.

The compensation, as with life insurance, should be designed to compensate the families for lost earnings.

In that respect £500,000 seems fine, we are not in some sort of competition with the Americans.

Just out of interest I had a look on Norwich Union web site and their cover excludes "if the claim results from criminal acts, drug abuse, self-inflicted injury, war or riot and civil commotion" but no mention of terrorism
www.norwichunion.com/life-insurance/whats-not-covered.htm

My initial thought was why should the govenment compensate the victims, it was the terrorists that killed them not the Govenment (however indirectly you may look at it).

SO what happens if their life insurance does pay out, do they get that and the compensation from the Govenment or is it a case of either or

"God" is a euphemism for "beyond our control". It also includes forces of nature.

Compensate the families of the bombers for their distress. There's only five of them, so the compensation money will go further.

Then give all of the victims a piece of the tube train that they were blown up in, on a nice mahogany base. They can sell them as "limited issue" on e-bay, and make a fortune.

Why is anyone getting anything from the government?! Fekking money grabbers.

fair play for the ones that need compensation if their partner was the main breadwinner but people seeking compensation in cash from the government for the loss of a loved one makes me sick

If one of my parents died, I would be greiving. I would feel very grateful (if I needed it) if the government paid for councelling and that is as far as I would go.

If the life insurance policies that they paid in for pay out, fair enough - but to complain that you are not getting enough!!!! in cash because someone died?!?

Smacks of compensation culture. Sick.,

Indeed, whats worrying is that people seem to think the government can simply print money so that anything they receive from the government must be "free".

The basic 11K for loss of life payment looks a bit mean when you think that some of the bombers were immigrants and benefit claimants. Some of them were probably getting more than that 11K each year. I can see why some peope think that's shitty.

I think our government can claim more responsibility for his death though.
