Anybody see Dispatches last night, on C4, I think.
Anyway Here|http://www.hillside.org.uk/pdfs/investigations/hockburns.pdf is a link to a file that will explain it a lot better than I could.

I'm going to be checking my chickens in the supermarket from now on. It was quite a distressing program that's in two parts, the second part is on Monday night. You can see why veggies become veggies sometimes, not that I have considered it. I will be buying my meats from the local butcher from now on.

Saw the programme and felt that many peole will miss the real issue. It is no good expecting the levels of welfare that some would like for chickens when they want to buy the product for less than the price of a pint of beer.

Do you think all the chicken used in the processing industry from Thailand and the far east enjoys better standards?

If you wan't improved standards they come at a cost, be selective and buy locally sourced food from known producers. Supermarkets have much to answer for, they say they provide what customers demand but in reality we all really know that we buy what they decide to stock on the shelves.
It is unfortunate that many people have a lifestyle that does not allow them to appreciate the quality of fresh, natural produce, and that doesn't necessarily mean buying organic. If you appreciate and have an undertsanding for quality meat you should seek out a good local butcher and avoid, at all costs, products from the main supermarkets. One possible exception would be the top end of products from Waitrose.
Living in a rural area we are fortunate to have a choice of excellent local independant butchers. Most of these select their own animals and can link the meat to the individual animal and local farm that produced it. Breed, fattening regime and hanging period have enormous influence on the eating quality and flavour of meat.
