Coasteering

I have just tried this amazingly excellent sport and wonder how many PHers have done so too?

For the uninitiated, it involves sea swimming, climbing up cliffs and rocks whilst being pounded by surging waves, hanging onto rocks by fingertips and leaping off cliffs into foaming rockpools. So much fun that almost can't believe it hasn't been banned.

For the initiated, where do you do yours?

did somewhere in Swanage to somewhere a load of miles away in Swanage a few times

Unfortunately the "ring of cheese" that sits where my climbing harness used to has curtailed the hanging on my fingers somewhat

I did canyonning in France a few years ago. It was sold to me as "caving without the roof".
Basically, it's following the course of a stream down a mountain, abseiling down waterfalls and jumping off ledges etc...

Also tried Via Ferrata while we were there. Scared the cr@p outta me!! (not a massive fan of heights)

I went canyonning in France many years ago as well. From La Cluzac to Lake Annecey. Great fun. I think the area near Swanage is 'Dancing Ledge' I used to Rock Climb there 20 years ago and there's a nice overhang where you can jump into the sea, About 50ft up.

I used to do this sort of thing around the S.Devon coast - Ayrmer Cove near Ringmore is good for that sort of thing, as is plenty of the craggy coastline in that part of the world.

There's an excellent cliff jump in Comino's blue lagoon. You jump down between the cliffs into a deep pool, but you need to be accurate as the rocks are very sharp.





Mrs Byte didn't let me do it, as the little uns wouldn't have liked it much if I missed the water and splatted myself on the rocks.

Have you seen good surf at Ayrmer? It looks like it would hold it but I've never seen it.

Around Torbay is pretty good too. Heading west from the Old Redoubt goes for 3 odd miles IIRC.

No good for surf IMO. Whenever there is anything they are mainly shoredumpers only get useful (sorry for lack of proper terms - I'm pretty useless) quite close in to shore.

Much better to go round to the usual suspects of Bantham, Bigbury or Challaborough (if you can stand the chavs) if you are after surf.

To be honest I think I prefer it like that as it's a lot quieter & good for having a paddle & explore outside the mouth of the cove . It's quite secluded and popular with naturists - the grockles who manage to find it often get surprised by the odd meat & veg or growler on show
