Moon Landings

Today is the anniversary of the first landing on the moon 29th July 1969.

To celebrate this momentous event Google have added a Moon page with maps to the main www.google.co.uk site.

I strongly urge that you all look at the map and zoom in to the strongest magnification..........

2005 - can't even get the bloody Shuttle into orbit.

Just out of curiosity, why did they all visit the same neighbourhood? Aren't there any other interesting bits on the moon or is there a clever techy reason why they couldn't?

The landing sites were chosen for various reasons of safety and geology, like the Hadley Rille.

Well, they didn't vist the same neighborhood. There are hundreds of miles between the six landing sites. However the landing zones were restricted to a band around the equator because of the limitations of the Saturn V rocket in placing the Apollo Command/Service/Lunar Modules on a trajectory to the moon.

The mission planners tried to pick sites that had different topographical features from each other so as to maximise the geology that could be studied. Other limitations were general safety and also the sun angles present on the moon during the missions' stay periods on the lunar surface.

Apollo 11 landed on the moon on July 20 1969. Armstrong set foot on the surface later in the day. In actual fact, in the UK he actually made his "one small step" in the early hours of the morning of July 21.
