Off to Hong Kong & China next week...Advice..?

Off to Hong Kong next weekend on business...(First visit...and on my own)

Travelling to Mainland China - Shenzhen midweek.

I should have a couple of days to explore HK.

Any advice, tips or recommended places to Go/Not go..?

I'd recommend lan kwai fong (soho) for a good night out. Wanchai is also good if you can put up with hawking prostitutes

Don't buy anything from the tourist areas (Bottom end of nathan road) unless you like being ripped off.

Be carefull in Shenzhen and Hong Kong, both are notorious for pick pockets.

If you're looking for a market Stanley Market is one of the best. The street markets in HK and Kowloon are very busy and full of dubious Chinamen trying to talk you out of your money. It is worth trying the local cuisine; just make sure it's cooked.

Get yourself up the mountain on the train and a visit to one of the many little islands is worth doing. If you go swimming in the sea make sure there are shark nets.

Yes, go visit Victoria peak, amazing view (and photo op).

Go to the Peak
Go to Ocean World.
Visit the Big Buddah.
Go along Nathan Road at Night.
Go to Lan Kwai Fong at Night.
Go on the Star Ferry to and from HK/Kowloon
Go on the MTR and be amazed how clean and punctual it is.
Have a drink in the roof bar at the Pennisular Hotel (go posh unlike I did - rucksack and jeans).
Go to Mong Kok to Temple Street Market/Ladies Market and the bird market

And he stayed in my apartment on Blue Pool Road.

As well as the other recommendations here I'd say;

Grab some Mexican food at the front of Coyote Bar and Grill on Lockhard Road and watch the world of Wanchai go by.

Try the bars in Soho rather than Lan Kwai Fong for a less touristy and more HK ex-pat atmosphere - Vodka Bar, Chapter 3, Gecko, Apres - all around the Hollywood Rd area (By-Far-Guy in a taxi). These are the bars on Pikey's site.

Visit Neptune II in Wanchai for an altogether different drinking experience (also on Pikey's site).

If you go to Stanley try and avoid Sunday, its packed as are all the restaurants.

Enjoy HK - fabulous place.

I was there on my own at christmas and I didnt feel lonely once, people were always willing to talk.
