I would just like to say good luck and gods speed to the Discovery Shuttle mission.

Not only will this begin to restore our confidence in space exploration but without this the planned trip to Mars isnt going to happen.

When I say the title of this I thought of Richard Whitely on the Discovery Channel.........

Supposed to be a little after 3pm local time here (so about 8pm in UK). The little ones will be outside in the pool watching as we can see it go up by looking over the nieghbor's roof...

...last I heard, however, is that there might be a weather hold.

What planned Mars mission?

By the time any Mars missions are being organised, the Shuttles will be sitting in museums.

It is now 24 years since the shuttle's first flight. It really is time that a formal decision on a replacement is made.

Launch schedule for 8.51pm BST tonight. Will be shown on the 24 news channels I'm sure.

Yes, until you are not expecting the shuttle's return and you get the double sonic boom over your house. (Que Mrs ErnestM frantically "something's exploded, etc, etc".

Still - I like where I live. Other than a certain small village in Scotland, I guess it is about the best place to bring up kids...

joking aside, It must take some guts to climb into a machine constructed from millions of parts all supplied by the cheapest tender, strapped to enough explosive to make Hiroshima seem like a fart!!

Somebody has to do it. If nothing else, just to regenerate public support. Because, with public support you get funding. Funding makes it happen.
