Piercing childrens' ears

One of my private nightmares finally happened. As an absent father, I went to collect my 5 year old daughter to stay for the weekend, as I do every weekend, and her mother has had her ears pierced.
I can't help but fume quietly that in an age where it is a basic legal principle that children cannot consent to making a choice as they lack sufficient understanding, in a world where corporal chastisement is no longer acceptable, in a society that puts such a high value on protecting children, that STILL a supposedly responsible parent can submit an innocent child to an assault with complete impunity for a purely stupid and cosmetic purpose.
How on earth can the law allow it?

I agree that it was really bad. I'd never ever let any children of mine have pierced ears. Not until they're 16 and then it's up to them. My parents made me wait and I respect that.
I hate seeing little kids with pierced ears. Especially babies... that's just soooooo wrong. Especially detest little boys with a pierced ear.

I completely agree. Put a little girl in a lovely little dress and shoes, tie her hair up nicely, with some nice hair accessories but DON'T subject her to facial jewellery!
My sympathies. Insist that she doesn't wear it when she's with you.

Got to agree with that!
I recall my boss bellowing down the phone at his ex (who said she was going to get their son's ear pierced) for every hole that you put in my son's body I will put a bigger one in yours and it wont be a piercing

I would have thought so too. At least pierced ears are fairly minor and don't often have complications. A friend of mine had her belly button pierced which became infected. She was not impressed, as it took ages to heal, and she ended up not being able to wear the piercing anyway.
At least at 14 she is likely to have some idea of what she is doing though..

What age is this? When are they old enough?
In many cases a 10 to 12 year old has a far more balanced prespective on life than a hormone-addled teenager or alcohol-fuelled school leaver.
Not trying to be atagonistic. I'm just not sure where you draw the line.

Thanks for the support. I've actually written to my MP and to Tony Blair questioning the practice and suggesting it should be just as illegal as tattooing a minor. If not, I'll be coming here with my petition.
Needless to say, I'm gutted as it has defaced my little princess but if I can possibly put a stop to this chav practice, I will.

Seriously, it was difficult to talk to her at all. For a start,she well knows my views on the subject and never even made the slightest effort to consult me. She claims it never even crossed her mind that I might object but when you reach this level of being thick and stupid, you have to walk away for fear of doing something you'll regret.
What is worse is that even though my daughter is a very bright and intelligent girl (I'm pleased to say my genetics won that battle albeit against an unarmed opponent), I feel confident that she will be dragged back by the mentality of the mundane standards of a family who believe chuffing fags in front of children is also acceptable.
