Scariest Stephen King book

Are there any avid King fans here who can recommend any particular novel as being the scariest, or the most gripping? :hippy:

I bought the book 'The Stand' today, which will hopefully be good as its 1500 pages long! Is it a particularly gripping read? Any other recommendations for the scariest books would be greatfully received :)

I read It years ago and it was seriously scary. Well, the first half anyway. Second half wasn't quite so chilling.

I watched the mini series of that, and thought it was OK, but like most of Kings' stories, the end is very weak.
Carrie's pretty good though (book-wise)

Excellent book,if you like him suggest you try Dean Koontz. Coldfire and Watchers are 2 of the best books I've read, the plane crash sequence in Coldfire is just amazing. I think he's better than Mr. King.

I was an avid SK reader starting with the stand, carrie, christine,firestarter and all that lot then they got very strange and it started to take to long to read then, i'd need to read each page a cople of times so I kindof stopped. I must dig them out and have another go. I think IT is probably the last one i read ( when it came out in hardback)

going waaaaaay of topic here, but has anyone ever read of the cthulu cycle of books by H.P. lovecraft. i find that his writing is scarier than S.K. et al, because you really can feel the sanity slipping of the narator.

I won a book token as a prize for 'quiet endeavour' when I was about 11.

I went out and bought SK's IT, then had to take it into school for the headmistress to write some silly paragraph in the front cover to say what a good student I was.

She didn't seem very impressed by my choice of book though.

I enjoyed IT and the Stand, but i was never wholly freaked out by them.

I read Salems Lot, and i remember being vividly freaked out during some of it. The book wasnt as good as the other two, but it was scarier.

Nastiest, most pointless SK book is Kujo by a long way imho.

Some of Dean Koontz stuff is very mediocre but some is really good. Dark Rivers of The Heart is cracking.

James Herbet writes some prett sick stuff as well, The Others is well worth a read and '48 is great, set in a (very) alternative 2nd world war London.


So who's writes the most depraved/sickest fiction then? Any recommendations?

IT wins on all counts as sickest ever / scariest imagery ever.

I mean, the description of the flying leeches and the details of the feeling of the guys eyeball collapsing as its contents are sucked out... ew..

Sickest is because of the whole lost in the sewers solution.

Not really into horror films/books but have read Christine and got the DVD, the book is very creepy and not read for a few years, probably wont again.

I also read Fluke, which is really weird
