Just got a letter from my bank (electronic via internet banking) telling me how they had bounced a cheque because it would have made me £1:83 overdrawn and that for this pleasure they would be charging me £35.

Nothing unusual about that you might say. But...

I had intended to deposit some money on the day that the cheque was due to go through to cover any deficit. I just had one rather big problem.

The day was last Thursday, and we all know what was happening around my neck of the woods on the 7th. Indeed, my branch is on Moorgate, so whether I would have been able to get to it, whether it chose to remain open or not is questionable. All this being a rather moot point because in all the confusion, I forgot and, besides, building security at my place of work decided that they really didn't want to let any of us out of the building. I suppose they could say that I could have gone to the branch around the corner from Liverpool Street, but then again.

I see a rather interesting conversation with the branch manager coming on.

Bear in mind that it's an automated system that rejects the cheque and issues the letter - not a person.

One form is all it takes to xfer all your direct debits etc these days.

You would have thought they'd have some method to take such events into consideration rather than profiteering from it though.

Besides, I'd thought about just phoning up The Sun, I'm sure they'd love the story.

That's how they make so much money - they hope you won't notice or be bothered to fight it. I use First Direct and on the rare occasion that I've been caught out with such things, I've been able to call them and they've waived it. I also have a small overdraft facility so that just in case things do go pear-shaped or I forget to pay myself, they don't get upset.

Just recently i made a credit card payment with cash thru my local bank,i normaly send a cheque to the C/Card company but this time i thought while ime in the bank ile do a cash payment, this was about 7 days before the C/Card payment deadline.

So imagine my surprise when i got penalised by the C/Card Co to the tune of £25 for a late payment, seems like paying cash over the counter takes a lot longer than sending a cheque by post?,i rang the C/Card Co and once ide got thru the automated system and we calmly chatted about what had happenend and they decided to credit my acc back the £25,no harm done!

Just tell the bank what has happened. If they stick to their guns move the account.

I have a feeling that they may buckle because of the circumstances. They would get especially bad PR if it made it to the press. Which of course they will when you write to the Daily Mail when they refuse to refund the £35.

Oh wow! Am I happy.

I knew there was a reason that I thought this shouldn't have happened, and after reviewing the documentation supplied when I opened the account I found it! And I quote....

"Dear Mr TeamD

Your application for a Bank Account has been successful and we are able to confirm that you have the following services:

Cheque book
Cheque Guarantee and debit card
use of our cash machines and LINK machines
Online banking and 24 hour telephone banking
An overdraft of £5"

Anyone got any suggestions as to how much compensation I should go for when I haul the manager over the coals at lunchtime?

Hey ho! Spent half an hour this lunchtime yelling at the assitant bank manager (shame really, she was quite fit), but it would appear that they can't get their heads around the following...

TeamD: "You are wrong, I am right"
Bank: "Er yes...but I'm cancelling the charges"
TeamD: "Yes, but there shouldn't have been any charges in the first f'ing place, so you're doing me no favours here, you will pay me £35 for my incovenience"
Bank: "Oh no sir, that's far too much"
TeamD: "Really? So it's ok for you to try and f**k me over is it?"
Bank: "But...blah...Terms and Conditions...blah"
TeamD: "Don't give me that sh!t, you know you're in the wrong. This is really simple, if you compensate me to the tune of £35, then I will walk away and forget about this, if you don't then I'll be on to the Banking Ombudsman, my solictor (once I've found one :s) and maybe I'll just consider whom might be interested in the misselling of financial services that appears to have gone on here"
Bank: "Errr, I'll talk to the manager in the morning"

I wonder exactly how far I have to push this?

I use online banking with a high street bank, I also have a credit card with them, so to pay the card I just transfer some money from my current account to the card, as soon as I click on conferm payment the money goes out of my account, as I can see on screen but I still takes 3 working days to get to my cards account!!!

Mate have a day off. They made a mistake and are rectifying it. Accept they'll refund the charges and leave it at that.

It is precisely that attitude that allows such institutions to get away with such behaviour.

But if they are giving him the money back, he's not loosing out. So why push for compensation? It shouts of 'I want you to pay for what you did' - if they apologise then let it lie. Don't hound them for compensation for your slight (if any) inconvenience.

Ok so next time you make a mistake do you want someone rubbing yer nose in it and being abusive?

Instead of "f"ing and shouting at them why not take the "I do understand this was your mistake but I am now out of pocket for my time and the phone bill while speaking to you. Would you pay me something, £5 or so to compensate me?" tactic. I did this and ended up with £100 in compensation for a small mistake that my bank made. Keeping calm can pay bonuses.

I'd say falsely trying to charge someone £35 quid is pretty abusive to start with. Do you honestly think this was a genuine mistake made by the bank? If so, you need to wake up and smell the coffee. All of this stuff is automatically generated by computer.

If 50% of the people who are charged incorrectly don't bother to query/argue, then that is more money in that particular bank shareholder's pocket.

Computers do not make mistakes. They simply follow human instructions. Someone has purposely tried to rip off this customer. Why?
