Hmm, reminds me of a documentary I have on the history of the BBS. Two of the people interviewed were the authors of the anarchist's cookbook 2000 (as the original is a banned book). When the Colombine incident happened the now sensible adults who wrote this text file had come from an age where it was the fashion to wear trench coats and shoot guns and make the odd pipe bomb at the weekend. The conversation went a little something like this...
"How did these kids go around for so long shooting guns, wearing trench coats and blowing things up without someone realising that something might be wrong?"
"You mean you didnt do stuff like that when you were a kid?"
"You mean you DID do stuff like that when you were a kid?"
"err... no..."
He went on to say that although they did stuff like that they were just anarchic rebel teenagers. They had nonoe of the hatred that had consumed the Colombine kids. Thanks to that incident there are certain american schools that really have assisine zero tolerance rules to try to prevent this. Kids are now getting expelled because they accidentally took a pair of nail clippers in with them and the like. While Micheal Moore does like to pull statistics out of his arse and make mountains out of molehills, I think the idea of the culture these days in the states, and to a much lesser degree here being based on fear hit the nail on the head.
