I'm sorry, I'm not swallowing all the guff about how good Live8 is or what we should be doing.

Currently on tv right now is a woman who wants to change the world. Look dear - you have £200m. You can do far more than me. Why don't you give £100m of your fortune and wipe off some of this debt.

And sorry, the show was opened by some OAP worth a staggering £750m. Sorry mate - do you really need all of the £750m? Could you not give most of it away, say leave yourself with a £100m or so?

And then Gates is on stage - buddy - you have the amount of money that could wipe out the whole debt in nearly one go.

Later this evening we have various other self important characters. As much as I like Pink, theres 4 chappies worth in excess of £200m. Sting is worth a mint along with Bono and U2. And just how much does Elton still spend on flowers.

I'm sorry, if these artists all feel so much abuot African debt, why don't they dig deep and pay it off themselves.

Me, i'm sick to death of multimillionaire performers preaching to me about what a difference i can make. Why don't they put their money where their mouth is first and lead from the front.

I kind of agree, and at the back of my mind is the fact that ok lets help Africa ect and lets try to make poverty history, but what about our country?

Its going down the shitter big style and no one seems to give a damn...

This sentiment is what will cause the Live 8 thing to backfire I feel. Maybe the youngsters feel differently. But for those of us who have been around a while we remember Live Aid. We also remember that, practically speaking, in the scheme of things it changed nothing at all. A whole bunch of people got to feel a bit happier about being good world citizens and that was about it.

Sure. Many individuals got help they needed - and that was a good thing. It IS a good thing. But still - nothing changed.

Maybe, just maybe, this time the whole shebang will actually affect world government and things will improve.

But I'm not holding my breath.

Oh. And I'm not watching. No sir. The wife is watching Wimbledon. Then I've hired a video.

This particular television extravaganza is one I'm delighted to allow to pass me by.

To be fair to Bill Gates he does actually put his money where his mouth is.

As for Bono, MCartney, Jagger etc i agree 100%.

Bill Gates has given loads to Charity, but your right... Not religious but I remember a story from the bible (Catholic school )

It was about a rich man that gave bags of gold to a church, which meant nothing to him, and a little old lady gave one coin, but that was all she had in the world.

I don't agree they are making a sacrifice to help african debt, the money these multi, multi millionnaires give is a token amount IMHO

As always, none of us is in a position to criticise unless we've done something more constructive ourselves.

Fair point, but in the spirit of the widow's mite story I wonder how many of the zillionaires have given the same percentage of their wealth to charity as the average PHer?

Isn't Live 8 about raising awareness rather than raising for charity ? Why should Mccartney and Maddonna pay back the money to Western governments ? Surely the idea is to get the debts written off ?

I thought the suggestion was that they might between them manage to give a few hundred mill to Africa, not our muppets in parliament.

If you've got all the time in the world your time is free. I'd also like to see them stump up a decent amount, they have unfathomable wealth.

Do as we say not as we do?

Eh? I can criticise who I want thanks.

And i'm certainly going to criticise a bunch of self important multimillionaires who are currently on a quest to make even more money through a brand exercise called Live8!

How is Madonna supposed to personally stop the dumping of developed world surplus agricultural products in the African markets? That is a political problem that can only be addressed by western governments.

I'm sure the likes of Paul McCartney, Madonna, Elton, Sting, et al do give to charity and I'm sure that when you have the responsibility of millions of pounds, it's probably quite difficult to decide who to give to and how much with so many causes looking for donations.

Yes, these people could wipe out 3rd world debt between them, but would it really make any difference if they did that?

The problem is more to do with corrupt governments than lack of money, and just putting money into a big pot without addressing the problems that have caused the poverty to start with is not really going to change much for the people who are really affected by it.

This is the second concert I've seen in aid of Africa, and as great as they are, I hope there is no need for a third.

live8live.com said:

These concerts are the start point for The Long Walk To Justice, the one way we can all make our voices heard in unison.

This is without doubt a moment in history where ordinary people can grasp the chance to achieve something truly monumental and demand from the 8 world leaders at G8 an end to poverty.

The G8 leaders have it within their power to alter history. They will only have the will to do so if tens of thousands of people show them that enough is enough.

By doubling aid, fully cancelling debt, and delivering trade justice for Africa, the G8 could change the future for millions of men, women and children."

Geldof was saying how previous fund raising was such a success. Are charitable donations pointless now it's all political exploitation?

Eh? If it'd make no difference to wipe out third world debt then wtf is the point of all the campaigns to cancel the debt??

It's a question of how much our opinions are worth. I for one have done nothing, given nothing. So if this Live8 achieves anything at all, then it has done more than I've done. Good to them for that.
