Corrective Laser Eye Surgery - Optimax
Discussion
French TVR visited them prior to having his done with Accuvision, take a look here www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f=141&t=119450
I had my peepers done by Boots.
before the operstion - left eye averagely sh!te, right eye piggin awful. Couldn't count my toes in the shower - kept on getting 10 plus a mystery big one.
Anyway, had the laser stuff done - amazing. Bit of a problem with my right peeper, basically 'cos it was so poo it was never going to be properly minted.
end result - 20/20 vision , no specs, get in the shower in the morning and realise that I have only 10 toes after all.
I believe the latest treatment is done by 'wavefront' which is an even more accurate way of treatment.
If you imagine your eyeball is like an orange, full of microspic dimples on its surfacew which refract light irregularly, then the laser surgery smooths it all out, removing all the high spots, leaving a smooth eyeball.
Anyway just go for it.
If you want more info pm me and I will let you have my phone number.

Had mine done June last year with optical Express using Lakik. Was -5.75 in each eye and now have perfect vision in both eyes.
As already mentioned your welcome to contact me as well if you need any further info.
My eyes do get a little more tired than they used to especially with VDU's though.

Radial keratotomy, right? If that's what I think it is, the laser cuts a series of fine slits in the cornea which eases the curvature and therefore the focal length. Short sight is reduced/corrected. However whilst this can correct distance vision, your near point will move further away - hence the reading strain someone mentioned. For this reason alone, apart from having death rays shoved in my eyes, I'm happy to stay with contacts

I'm -6.25 in both eyes, with axial correction required in both..
I've worn glasses for 22 years now, and, whilst I'd love to be able to wake up in the morning and see without blinding scrabbling around for two peices of f**king expensive japanese glass, I get the feeling that we just dont know enough about the long term effects of laser eye treatment..
Come back and ask me in 20-30 years and I'll probably have a different opinion, but right now, I know I can throw my bins on and everything is ok, or I can faff around with some incredible little bits of plastic and not have to wear my bins...
As it stands, I find my glasses quite entertaining when people borrow them in the office.. The game is; stand up, close your eyes, put my glasses on and then try to walk around the office.. I reckon that's how they got Neil Armstrong to look like he was walking on the moon!!

I went to an open day at Optimax a few months ago. The minute I walked through the door, they demanded my name and address - which they've since used to send me junk mail on a regular basis. I went armed with a list of questions, expecting to be able to fire them at a surgeon, but instead got fobbed off onto a receptionist/saleswoman who couldn't answer them in any detail but kept saying that if I'd just sign on the dotted line and pay a deposit, I'd be able to talk to a surgeon in due course...I made my excuses and left, as they say.
By contrast, I went to Accuvision the other week after reading 968's recommendations on this very forum, and their whole setup and approach felt 100% more professional. They gave me a detailed series of eye examinations lasting over an hour in total, discussed the risks with me at length, and answered all of my questions to my satisfaction - all at no cost and no obligation. The upshot is I'm having wavefront LASIK there next week. I'll let you know how I get on.
Ian (currently -4.25 & -5.00)

I had Lasik last year in one eye ( other was 20/20) and the miss's had both hers done.
I was suffering from headaches/migranes before as I found it uncomfortable wearing glasses(for one eye) and was straining too much. All gone now
Well happy, and so is the Miss's evenmore than me infact as she was wearing Glases and contacts to(not at the same time
)
Go for it I am petty sure you wont regre it.

I had mine corrected via LASIK by Ultralase 4 years ago. I went from roughly -9 in both eyes to -0.5. Night vision isn't the best and I always wear specs for driving even though I would be legal to drive without them.
Having said all of that I have got to say it is one of the best things I've ever done. Before the surgery I wore specs that were so thick I would have a constant red mark on my nose and my ears would hurt from the weight.
Now I can play sports and go swimming and wear cool shades etc and it's just ace!
Go for it!

I was thinking about this a couple of years ago and was persuaded out of it by my optician (probably to get me to spend the £400 on the glasses) He told me that a close friend of his is one of these harley st type eye specialists and spends most of his time trying to make the best of the cock ups done by this surgery. The success rate is not as great as you think and there was a time where the Boots surgery was bordering on the negligent. I also have a couple of friends who have had this whose eyesight improved dramatically and then trailed off to such a point that they are wearing stronger glasses now than when they started.
His last bit of advice was basically do you wanr someone messing around inside your eye with a possibility that they may make things worse or do you want the minor "issue" of having proper eyesight by using glasses/lenses but your eyes will still be in top condition.
I bought the glasses.

Fair enough but my eyes were so bad that I couldn't even wear soft contact lenses as not enough oxygen could get to my eyes (the lenses were relatively thick). This meant I had to use gas permeable lenses which meant I couldn't do sport as there was a good chance of them falling out if you headed a ball, say.
For me it was a risk worth taking and 4 years on there are no noticeable deteriorations.
