War Of the Worlds
Discussion
saw this tonight..read quite a few rave reviews.
First half a hour is pretty awesome.
Then Tom's Kids get irritating. 10 minutes later, Im hoping the girl gets slaughtered fast.
The best special effect is the bit with the exploding bridge from the trailer.
nothing else really tops that.
the second half is pretty poor. There is a really tedious 20 minute section in the basement of Tim Robbins House, where the girl is even more irritating.
Incredible thing is, that Independence day, one of the cheesiest most stupid films of all time....was better.
Best part of the evening was the King Kong Trailer.

I'm really disappointed. I wanted to see a film where the Martians go up Exhibition Road in London and destroy Imperial College (HG graduated from there) and then go on to Woking (he was from Woking). HG had the Martians destroy all the places he loathed.
Setting the film in America destroys the plot somewhat, then again perhaps I expect too much.

I went to see this yesterday too, and came away with very mixed opinions of the film.
The scenes involving real sets were really impressive, about as good as they come in some respects. There's a scene involving a Boeing 747 that really takes some beating, such is the scale of the thing (apparently, a real 747 was used too). However, I found some of the CGI effects rather dissapointing, particularly the shots of people coming to an end when the alien machines first show themselves.
The film also ends rather abruptly. The middle 90 minutes are really intense, but then the film just ends really quickly and doesn't explain itself brilliantly. If you know the story already then you'll know basically what happens in the end; this ending just isn't explained well, and you are left with so many questions as to what happened here and there. It was almost as if they ran out of money and so just though 'what the hell, that'll do'.
There was also quite a few continuity mistakes. As an example, there is a scene where all electrical items have been disabled by an EMP (electro-magnetic pulse). And yet this guy is filming the arrival of the aliens with a camcorder, and the film even makes a feature of the camcorder and emphasises the fact that it's working...when it couldn't possibly work any more. You'll see what I mean when you see the film.
This film is very good, and as a piece of cinema it is brilliant. I think though it could have been made better.
I agree that, after 30 mins, I wanted to throw the little girl to the aliens myself - she's so annoying. I also agree that Independence Day is probably a more impressive film, bearing in mind it was made years ago.
Overall though, the film is definately worth a viewing.

I haven't seen it...I was totally put off by the trailer. After Jeff Wayne's musical version, it just didn't sound right without Richard Burton saying the "No-one would have believed, in the last years of the 19th century, that human affairs were being watched from the timeless worlds of space..." line. American Trailer Man just doesn't cut it.

they do actually say that line at the start, sort of.
Its morgan freeman I think.
I think the original music would have helped too.
spoiler alert if you look below!
It was just as impressive in real life!

Yeah, I loved that music. The sound effects and music in the new film are pretty good, but I miss that "waah-oo waah-oo waah-oo" sound from the Richard Burton musical version.
The new alien tripod thingy's do make a cool low-pitched two-tone foghorn type of sound though - sounded awesome in the cinema, and even quite scary and times.
And yeah, it sounded like Morgan Freeman to me too.
A version set in Victorian England would be so cool, infinitely cooler than the modern day US (which will anyway look out of date within the decade, like some spastic 1970's "Towering Posiedon '78" type rubbish). The US makes me sick actually, with their myopic cultural scope.
Like Titanic, I refuse to see this film on principle.

Hmm I thought this was set in the 50s hence the camcorder would have been a wind up jobie
as you said a 747 is in the film, is it war of the worlds modern day then? Ste...
