Hi All

My wife and I like to buy orignal pieces of artwork as and when we find it, usually modern bright stuff that we like.
We have stumbled on the odd place that sells art from local artists.
We usually only spend between £50 and £300, we also are not buying to make money, just to have nice pieces to hang in the house

Just wondering if there is anywhere else we could find this sort of stuff? I have always wanted to go to the Royal college of art exhibition, as I understand they sell off pieces there.

Any more ideas?

Cheers

www.jinwicked.com sells some decent stuff (or used to last time I looked, don't know if she's still selling her work).

I know somebody who would like to sell. Email me and I'll give you a web link to an example of her stuff.

You can also look for some graduate exhibitions and if you don't buy there you will make plenty of contacts for future purchases.

You can do worse than take a look on ebay - there is always tons of stuff in that proce range - most of it from the actual artists themselves.

Any chance you can post the link up here?

Also, where would I find out about Graduate exhibitions?

Cheers

Yeah - but don't do what my father-in-law did. He won an auction for an "original cat painting" for his wife.

Anyway, shipped from America it turned up and as his wife was admiring it she noticed that you could see the numbers under the paint. He refused to say what he paid - but it seems he payed a lot of money for a paint-by-numbers picture of a cat!!

Yes... he is usually that dumb.

Here you go Ben www.wincitang.com/

I think the site is several months out of date as she is stateside and will be for a long time.

As for grad exhibitions email thru her site for some advice. But the local art colleges, universities will all have dates. I'm sure if you have a free local paper there will be an art group listed which could help. Also galleries are often pestered by budding artists and will likely have a good source of contacts.

Email sent too.

Do artists (students possibly) still sell their original artwork at the top of Green Park on Piccadilly?

As you're in the South East take a look at the South East Open Studios website.

Particularly Alastair Loxton who also happens to be a car nut and does stuff for car mags, the Italian Job event etc etc.

An ex-girlfriend of mine makes her living by selling 'original' art on eBay. She is actually pretty good. She and her boyfriend front an artists collective that produces original pieces in a large workshop in a certain northern conurbation.

The reality is it's just him and her, not a group of artists, and they use Chinese 'artists' to mass-produce her designs, which she pays peanuts for and then sells on for silly money.

Good business plan, but her customers are being misledas to the source, originality and uniqueness of each piece. Might not matter to some, but I find it to be a very underhand method.

I was in a restraunt in Dover and they had original peices by an Italian artist hung up round the walls. Upon asking who the artist was, I was given a price list. £200 later I have a fantastic piece on my wall.

I do agree with you in general. However, if you like the piece and the price is right then fair enough. It's really just a product.

It depends on whether you want to spend a hundred quid or a few thousand. If the former, and it looks nice on your wall then go for it.

If the latter, then don't buy unless you know a bit about art and the artists.

This is exactly the sort of thing we are looking for.

I will also take a look at ebay.

We have bought one piece from the exhibitors on the North side of Hyde Park.

Other pieces we have picked up here and there. I was just trying to find a couple of places I know I can go to if we are looking for something.

Cheers all
