Walking home in Exeter at some point this morning i was taken aback by the huge flashes of lightening and rolling thunder in the distance. Very strange wind aswell, you could 'feel' the tension in the sky. Totally dry overhead thankfully, especially as i had to stop for a little rest/sleep a few times on the way. (I think that explains how i lost a few hours anyway.)

Glad to know i wasn't dreaming about the thunder anyway

Rob.

Gives the BBC more 'stock art' to use when the word 'Global warming' is mentioned in an article. Will go nicely with the 'cars sat in traffic jams' art they often employ too.

I was in the middle of that whilst sailing to Portsmouth for the trafalgar stuff.

It was pretty spectacular when all you can see is lightning hitting the water all around. A little disconcerting when the nearest tall thing is the metal mast attached to your boat, and the instruments start to give strange readings.

Question for any photographers...

How do you photo lightning? Saw loads in Africa that I wanted to photo but by the time I saw it, it was gone...

I would guess that you would need lightening-fast reactions.......

Only really works at night.

Needed: tripod, camera with full manual shutter control, cable shutter release, rubber wellies, patience

1. Put camera on tripod
2. Lock shutter open
3. Wait for lightning to strike
4. Close shutter, wind on to next frame
5. And repeat ...

There's a fair bit of luck involved in actually capturing the lightning - most of the strikes will occur out of frame, so take plenty of film/memory cards

No ideas on F-stop settings, but I'd imagine it's best to open the aperture right up.
