Although the BBC's online oesn't name the banks involved, they did on BBC Breakfast this morning. As a customer of one of the involved banks, how worried should I be?

(I have been a victim of Identity theft previously - see another thread! - and I don't particularly fancy going through all that again!)

There are times when newspapers actually serve a useful purpose in society!

Appalling.

Yuu reap what you sow. The banks want to outsource their customer handling to people who can barely speak English and pay Indian call centre workers a pittance - then this happens. Absolutely inevitable.

I love the quote ""While the allegations made in the dossier are very serious, City of London Police would like to remind people that incidents of this kind are still relatively rare," she said.

Cobblers. And it only requires a few incidents like this to reveal the banking details of half of the population of this country. The guy was offering 200,000 details per month ffs.

I no longer do on-line banking - and I don't think I'll be taking it up again.

Didn't I hear that compared to the average Indian worker, they are very well paid? I think corruption is a societal thing, not just related to how much you earn. I bet you could bribe an Indian policeman more easily than a British one.
Money does not solve all the world's problems. They're still living in tents in Indonesia/Sri Lanka; the useless corrupt governments can't fix things and probably don't care too much either.

I'd like to buy Mohammed Aktar's PIN number and mother's maiden name please. How much will that cost me?

The entire banking system is turning into a nightmare of identity theft, phishing scams, complacent banks, and massive international crime syndicates.

I am not someone prone to worry, but the whole kit and caboodle is looking ever more precarious. And as a previous poster has pointed out, the banks are getting ever keener on avoiding responsibiilty for actually looking after your money they hold in trust.

But what about the datacentre staff who have access to the backend?

The perp in this case was apparently an 'IT worker', which doesn't imply a call centre agent to me. I find it hard to believe that somebody on the phones can get at 200,000 customers a month whereas that would be trivial for somebody with direct access to the databases.

Really poorly photocopied letter today...

Relating to account number: 88591920325302

We write to introduce 1st Credit to you.

CITIFINANTIAL Europe PLC has assigned 1st credit ltd the full outstanding balance due under the agreement referred to above. As a result of this assignment, the full amount outstanding is due to 1st credit immediately.

As the outstanding balance is owed to 1st credit you should not make any payments to CITYFINANTIAL EUROPE LTD as it will take significantly longer to process the payment onto your 1st Credit account. To discharge your outstanding balance, you now need to make payment direct to 1st Credit.
You should contact this office immediately so that we can agree payment terms with you. Failure on your part to do this will result in more formal recovery proceedings being taken against you.

In accordance with the data protection act 1998 we will comply with any request for a copy of the personal information about you that is held on our computer system.

send your request, along with the administration fee of £5.00 and an sae to the above address.

PLEASE DO NOT IGNORE THIS LETTER

we look forward to hearing from you.

Call me naive but who are 1st credit, who are cityfinantial europe plc, why do I owe them money, why is the ammount owed more than £8000.00 and why has the mythical figure suddenly been tranferred to another company? Why are they using cheap paper, why do they want me to call on an 0870 number, why do they want me to SMS to 60121 'and we will call you'.

I know what I owe... and who to. But it's not even half that, and it's to my bank...

And what the is their problem - £8000 is nothing - working full time I can reach that in a month...

Any one?

I had nothing better to do so I just called my "Relationship Manager" at the bank and asked her what my rights are if someone managed to hack into my account.

She was hardly reassuring. She said I "should" be okay, providing that all the security is top notch on my PC". I said that I'm no IT expert - I've got anti-virus and stuff, but I don't know if it's the best! Also, the word "should" is rather ambiguous. The upshot is, she could offer no guarantees! As such, I think I'm gonna cancel my online banking arrangement.

But let's all remember that central databases are never vulnerable, at least according to various world governments...

Christ that's worrying. Surely if the bank digs hard enough they could find a security 'weakpoint' on any PC this side of the CIA?? I'm certainly no expert - but perhaps THEY should supply software to be used which indemnifies US against any theft?

I might well be cancelling my internet banking - although my branch is now a joke due to the amount of people using internet/telephone banking!

Not saying that I like the banks off-shoring or outsourcing our data, but not sure what this has to do with this case. There's been other cases where it's been UK and US workers selling banking and credit card details in the past.

problem is that in india everyone has a price. a cop will even give you a receipt for a bribe,i kid you not.a judge will give you a price, you pay, you get off.
on the subject of call centres, i have spent 45 minutes today with the halifax trying to sort a couple of things out. they told me they could not help me because i did not answer my security questions correctly, what is your mothers maiden name *******, what is your date of birth? *******. now i know both of these are correct obviously and the f***wit at the other end said he could not help me. that was a scottish call centre. i will now have to go to my branch and sort this out.

citifinancial are mortgage brokers and insurance agents, I have dealt with them before - a bit sharkish, but only in the same vein as the ones that advertise on daytime tv for second charges for holidays (). the other lot I have never heard of, and a bit of research reveals no dealings with any company of that name in the UK in the last 18 months by anyone in our company (largest independent in europe)
