Oh god yet more obvious crap from the leading seller of "state the bleedin' obvious". Talk about twisting facts to create a story....

I read this on the BBC site who took a similar tack. Of course, if you are good at DIY and ADD VALUE to your house then yes, when the revaluation of council tax occurs then you might find yourself in a different band - and hence pay more. The house is worth more, obviously.

So its not a tax on DIY, just a product of the rising house price, Britains facination with DIY and bizzare method of local government funding which is based on your house value.....

Daily Mail - bunch of arse....

Hang on a minute

Houses were banded , what, 14 years ago. and the council tax is a LOCAL tax. So why is there a need to re-band the whole of the UK?

Surely in terms of local areas, a "nice" are is still a "nice" area and in relative terms a house in band D would still be in band D FOR THAT AREA/COUNCIL.

As they are doing the whole of the UK, surely this re-banding exercise is an excuse to penalise the south (or any areas with rising/risen prices) when compared to the labour heartlands by making the south east band H and Scotland band A?

Anyone in the know care to comment further?

There is a central message that the Daily Mail is right to highlight.

The Government has put more of the burden of taxation on council tax, which has risen sharply. This problem will only get worse with the coming revaluation.

However if you extend your home so that it is worth more, of course you will pay more council tax when the property is revalued.

help me understand. I dont get this thing about attacking newspapers.

Either the story is true or it isnt.

if it is true I'd like to know. If it isnt true then lambast them all you like.

after all isnt that the point of a newspaper? you know news about things that effect us.

perhaps they should keep all this quiet and just put pictures of David Becham on teh front or something

I will decide what I worry about. But to be able to decide I need to know about it in teh first place.

I dont buy the mail but I imagine if I read the article I could decide for myself how likly it is to happen or whether it is scaremongering

Pesty, the Daily Mail is definately for the hard of thinking....

Its all pretty obvious and the fact is that there is a bigger issue here, which is somewhat missed in the pursuit of a scare story.

What will happen is a re-valuation of the bandings for your council tax. This means that the bandings will change and some houses will go up and others "may" go down (in reality it will be pretty much the same with some increases across the board). The bandings currently are a joke and if you happen to live in an area which has had big value changes it doesnt make sense. Reversely if you live in an area with REALLY expensive houses then everyone is in the bandings anyway.... so its a bit of a joke...

But, if you have done improvements to your house - you will have added value (probably). That is why a lot of people do this. You take an average 3 bed semi and add a conservatory and another bedroom in the loft and you have a 4 bed house which is worth more.... so you run the risk of having to pay more council tax....

Now I am no genius here, but thats pretty obvious and to be expected. Its hardly a case of a tax on home improvements or DIY is it...???

If you want to be pedantic then we pay tax on DIY to start with - we pay VAT dont we?

The problem is that they are not newspapers. And they don't bring you the news. What you get is the hidden agenda of the owner. Who usually isn't British yet wields huge power in this country.

But its exactly the same with the BBC and their own liberal hidden agenda, camera parterships and the government. its all spin and we all know it.

So you read/hear/see the stories/bullshit and decide for yourself how much faith you have in the story.

This story on first appearance does have quite some significance to homeowners I it does appear to have merit in being printed. without reading the article I canot sumise for myself.

where the owner comes from has no bearing on this in my opinion. But if some desk jockey is going to come around to my house then tax me higher becuase I didnt piss all my money up the wall on fags and beer I want to know about it.

l'm sorry but l find the presumption and subsequent presentation of your own opinion as fact rather aggravating. This re-evaluation was performed in Wales already where house prices have risen by the national average.

www.pressbox.co.uk/detailed/24660.html

"Observing the recent Welsh revaluation, it notes, ‘the overall effect of the new valuations is that 28.3% of properties have moved up one band and 4.4% of properties have moved up two bands. 8.2% of properties went down by one band. The worrying prospect for London is that Cardiff appears to have fared badly as a result of the revaluation. Only 2.1% of properties in Cardiff went down a band, while 49.4% of properties in Cardiff went up by one band and 13.3% went up by 2 bands’ (c.13). "

..much the same my arse! Where did you get such innocent faith in the powers that be?

The Council Tax rebanding will Sc*w richer, Tory supporting areas.

Following on from the change in the system for Local government financing we are witnessing a massive transfer of resources to the Labour heartlands.

Thanks for that - I was merely trying to be even handed and not let politics get in the way of the issue here. I am more than aware that this will be used by the majority of councils to raise additional taxation to cover their short-falls (or is this their inefficiency). Either way, its an excuse which was highlighted in the recent election.

I was attempting to steer away from either side. Sorry for any annoyance, but I am more than aware of the situation. But lets not get into that now - we were discussing the media and its hidden (or not so hidden) manifesto.
