I'm feeling a bit sick just now. A deep sickness right in the pit of my stomache. Maybe like that feeling you got the first time you saw the starving Ethiopeans on the Live Aid appeal all those years ago.

Somewhat dumb struck and wondering what the hell to do.

About 1/4 mile away (next door neighbour but one) there is a farm run by a couple with 3 kids. It's a run down sort of place and they're neighbours so we say hello and chat a bit. Nothing too deep but like the muck in their yard it's getting deeper.

I get the feeling that they are a bit ostracised by the rest of the community, yet so far we get on well with them.

There's been a few mornings where the fellow has driven past and I've been outside. He always stops for a chat and we discuss the price of butter or how well the grass isn't growing this year. He assures me all the signs are for a favourable summer.

Recently he had a birthday and we helped out decorating the local pub with a few banners and balloons. Much drinking, and it seemed a good night was had by all.

His wife is a friendly lass and seems chirpy but recently it has come to light that he suffers from depression. At first I wasn't too concerned with this and was perhaps guilty of thinking, yeah well we all get a bit depressed now and then.

Last week he took an over dose of something or other and this appears to be a recurrent theme.

Tonight we met his wife in the local shop (for local people) and Mrs Ex reports that he is in a pretty bad way. Seems he up to his fourth session of electo-shock therapy this week.

Now apparently he's feeling 'better' and wants to come home this weekend. His wife, perhaps understandably is in utter dispair, and we are left wondering Jesus Fuckin Aitch Christ Wot Am Us To Do?

I thought this kinda shit went out with the dark ages (shortly after Labour got into power). I can't imagine what the hell it must be like to lie in a bed/chair and let someone administer God knows what into your head.

What the hell do you feel like coming out of such an experience? Does it hurt? Are you so doped up that you can't say no, and even if you did would anyone listen?

God's breath, I don't know, maybe now a days they turn the current down a bit? What the hell is going on here?

Mrs Ex has (for want of a better term) life experience of this type of thing. But, his wife seems so young and really has no skills for dealing with this, yet it seems no one is offering her any support. Both of us are a bit 'freaked' that this kinda stuff can come up in conversation whilst we're trying to buy milk and sausages.

We both feel at an utter loss here. Whilst not wanting to sit back and do nothing, what can we do?

[Nick Ross]Now please, don't have nightmares.[/Nick Ross]

Thanks for listening.
