They have built smaller versions I think and they work... I'm excited about seeing this thinmg built. For a country like australia its a good way of generating power.

Not for a second, however the tallest man made structures like Taipei 101 are really only around 500 meters tall. The shear size of a full scale generator if its 1km tall would be a feat in itself.

I don’t have a firm grasp over the volume of moving air really, ultimately this will define it’s efficiency.

Edit: Just spotted that they claim its 15m/s which is about 33mph.

So (0.5*(15m/s*the cross sectional area of the funnel/pipe thing that stick out of the top))*(15^2) = 200,000,000 watts (200 MW – power output according to their website)

So solving for the cross section area its 1185 km^2/Pi = 377^2 = 19.42 km radius (39 km diameter).

This seems a little optimistic doesn’t it?

I should be pretty damn clean - certainly compared with wind generation or solar panels. Bloody great idea, I'd love to see it work...

Though to be fair, it will cost a fortune to build - forget about payback time - and is somewhat vulnerable to nutters with aeroplanes.

The Govt will spend 5 years evaluating it, 5 years dealing with protests, then commission a small one which takes twice as long to build as planned, goes massively over budget and then breaks.
