Road pricing.
Apparently, some 47% of people think it's a cunning plan, as reported on the Beeb's News at 10.
Unfortunately, as Little Hammond pointed out on the Andrew Neil show later, it's all very well decongesting the roads by pricing everyone off them but what exactly is the point if...everybody's sat around at home because the only untaxed activities left to man's individual powers of resolution ~ without the clammy claw of the seemingly inexorable tide of post-Thatcher communism conspiring to it's shaftorial best ~ are the twin pursuits centred around the imbibing of Jeremy Springer and the breaking of copious wind?
Still, that didn't stop the serious business of worrying how the incidence of such iniquitous taxation would afflict 'the poor;' we were assured that 'Jag Man' and 'Rolls Royce Man' would simply shrug and carry on.
Well, gripping analysis, f@ckweeds but slightly missing the point by several million, daily road users.
You see, morons of the media and associated commentators - including supposed bastions of the right but ultimately ineffectual, Tory panelists on the evening's QT (i.e. Redwood) - the country kind of depends on it's roads: it kind of needs the provisions of road haulage and the industry of all those repping men in their myriad assortment of battling metal.
That's what our economy is; and yet not one commentator has considered the crippling inevitability for road freight that these stupefying impositions represent.
Quickly totting up what this might cost ourselves, I immediately considered our distribution operation that trawls the main motorway corridors, six days a week, pretty much 18 hours/day: in the instance of just one vehicle to the smoke from Manchester (a 400 mile round trip), using predominantly the obvious m-way routes, it's going to cost what, approximately £3-400 depending on best-worst assumptions on charge rate/location variations? Even if fuel was free, that would cost at least £150 but more likely upto £250+ more per such trip than today - and that's before we get raped by that sadistic, totalitarian nut in charge of the capital.
How on earth will business manage? How on earth can it conceivably absorb this level of additional cost when hauliers generally are already wondering how to make it pay?
It's another classic example of our entirely hoodwinked nation being sold a bill of goods even Del Boy wouldn't dare contemplate and yet which to this mound of half baked, socialist planners, is simply more grist to their mill of total, UK-wide, economic emaciation.
But this is what both the left - and their unholy allies in the media - do, continually: they bleat on and on and on about inequality, rights and tolerance, focussing soley on two, minority groups, the 'poor' and 'The Rich (bastards).'
But in furthering their version of the Oktober Revolution, they rather forgot something: it's the big mob in the middle that are getting trampled on, not the landed gent (all 3 of 'em that's left) or the legion of shelled suitees.
Whether you're a teacher, doctor, lawyer, printer, trucker, cabbie, businessman or IT johnny - you, I and probably us all, have one overriding thing in common.
We are being utterly, utterly screwed.
I pray that David Davies rises up and decapitates this shameless executive before it ever gets it's teeth into this one because like fox hunting, it has too much the ring of left wing, cause celebre about it: I'm just not entirely confident there are quite enough students of the Hitchin with whom one might rely to pull it off.
I honestly believe we're staring at the very germ of Orwell here, this new phase of Nulabian Mind F@ckery.
In the meantime, I may well have no alternative but to bring forward a simultaneous leap into Ferrari, Lamborghini and Maclaren ownership.
Because in 10 years time it may well be game over.

Well said Derestrictor, I agree totally. I would only quarrell with you on a few of your latter points and the word "socialist". As you may know, I consider myself a "socialist", simply meaning that I have a social conscience and do NOT believe totally in the Adam Smith "law of the jungle" without some responsibility of Government for the people it "represents". (no taxation without representation, isn't that what the Americans say?)
Substitute responsibility for representation, otherwise What do we vote them in for?
But if you remember, The word Socialist was "expunged" from the Labour party name years ago by this mob. Tory B. liar is NO socialist and I don't recognise the Party he now leads.

The current government were elected with 21.6% of the electorate's votes. That's right, of all those eligable to vote, under 22% of them voted for "Boss" Tone, Fatso Two-Jags, "Eyebrows" Darling and "Grabber" Brown (Jesus, they sound like East-End gangsters).

Some would call me paranoid, but what I see happening here is....
Even the car manufacturers are getting worried about issues with oil usage, hence their more concerted efforts recently in the area of dual fuel etc. Now, were they to come up with a reasonably practical vehicle that didn't need petrol/diesel, where do these theiving scumbags (TB Liar & Co) get their tax from? We all know they don't give a sh1t about the environment, this is all about tax revenue. So if they transfer the charging to "per mile" rather than as fuel duty & road tax (but if you believe that would go away then you need help!), it just means that it doesn't matter whether you're driving a nice green mobile or a v8 gas guzzler, you still have to pay, hell!, the car could run on water or fresh air, but they'd still have a scheme for doing you over. Oh sure, there'll be rebates for users of this kind of fuel, discounts for that size of engine etc, but the process of claiming them , as with all others like them, will be so tortuous that many would fail to claim their justly deserved discounts and the unclaimed cash would swell the government coffers, which, of course, is exactly what they want!

I think TeamD has a point here. As more and more 'alternative' fuels are investigated and trialled, the goverment have evidentaly seen the 'writing on the wall' for a tax regime based on duty on the fuel. Witness the taxman's fight against cars smelling strangely of the local chippy.
A flat pay-per-mile scheme must look very attractive to them, particularly if it allows them to micro-manage our lives even further by tracking your every movement and fining you extra if you break the speed limit by 1mph.

What the furk to they care? This government hates business. Blair and Brown are working towards their total socialist nirvana where business doesn't exist and everyone works for the government. Road pricing/charging whatever, will require use of what has been termed 'black boxes'. These will need to manufactured and fitted to every car in the country.
Who will make them? My bet is a company with with Mr A Darling on its board.
Will we all rush out and queue up to have them fitted? Be assured we would have to pay for the priviledge.
How many seconds until eBay is flooded with a host of 'cheats' for the boxes? How many seconds until all our numberplates are duplicated?
Be aware that these 'black boxes' wil be linked to GPS. Therefore it will make the life of the anti-speed reprobates far easier. These 'boxes' will more than likely be linked to our cars' ECUs thus limiting our speed to the speed limit at all times.
I forsee an increase in the sales of older cars: try to fit a 'black box'/speed limiter to a pair of Weber 45s, Darling.
What can we do? Well seeing how the accumulated masses did not see sense to oust the lying weasel and his crew, voting them out is unlikely, though I do think that they will wait until after the next election before shoving this madness upon us.
When the fated day is upon us, I think we should all go out and drive on the regulated roads. All of us. With any luck the fines/charging system will go into meltdown. We should dispute all claims fo wrongdoing. And all parking fines. And all speeding fines. And hopefully, just hopefully, this whole scam will be seen by the population for what it really is.

Applying 2p/mile and removing fuel duty results in an annual saving of £287. Break even would mean an average road charge / mile of 11p being imposed.
When you point out that this theoretical saving will be completely wiped out by one visit to her mother's place oop North then the outrage sets in.
I guess that the way of making people understand the stupidity of the proposal is to understand the individual motivations and trigger the downside aspect in that aspect.

another new labour proposal aimed at strangling the country once again. if you consider transportation to be the "life blood" of an ecconomy, this is akin to an elderly former athlete with a heart problem, being given the heart of a 60 a day smoker for fifty years as the transplant. instead of being able to do a lesurely walk to the shops, he will only be able to shuffle to the front door and then crawl to the bus stop in cronic pain.
i could go on and on as to how stupid this is. yes there is congestion, yes it is a problem in certain areas but how do you tackle it? if left in power i think this government will continue to price us off the roads, they see this as a way of raising revenue, surely they can see that it would constrict business. but i'm not hopeful.
i do however think that this may be implemented to HGVs. with the sop to reducing haulage road tax and HGV diesel they may have this inflicted on them instead, resulting in extra costs to the haulage companies and inflation to our groceries and everything else.
