Toworrow I'm off, with the wife and kids, to a family reunion on my mother's side. Apparently there will be long lost aunts, uncles, cousins, second cousins, etc. I'm not particularly looking forward to it, but wondered if anyone had any interesting experiences at such events?

Sort of, most of my parent's family live abroad. So when I went out to Mauritiaus I met a load of people who I never knew.

Just remember they're family. Doesn't mean you have to like them.

Sounds like Eamonn Andrews is the only one missing.
You'll love every minute I'm sure
especially those 'great, great Aunts that insist on kissing you on the lips.

We had one on my Dad's side several years back. It's weird - you meet lots of people you've never seen in your life, who act like your best mate because they're related to you. Some of them might look like you too.

One of my second cousins is, apparently, a militant lentilist. As such, originally I was only going with the missus and I planned to drive my TVR and give it some serious welly when I arrive! However, the kids decided they wanted to come so that element of potential satisfaction has been removed!

Many, many lentilists on my Mum's side of the family. I look forward to winding them up in the future.

I tell them that plants need carbon emissions to breathe and grow. Therefore, I'm helping the environment!

Went to a family gathering last year - all there were direct descendants or partners of a particular couple who married in the 1820s... so there were 5th cousins etc.

Reasonably interesting, but not something I'd want to do more than once a generation

Well that was a total nightmare! I managed to offend someone I've not seen in 15 years by saying something that I will inwardly cringe over for many, many years. I guess everyone's done it at some stage in their life, but I asked a lady when her baby was due, to which she replied "I'm not pregnant". But she looked sooo preggers (even the sticky outy belly button). I've never, ever got it wrong before.

There's no way out of such a situation other than to quickly (and awkwardly) change the subject.

Thanks for reminding me of something I'd gratefully forgotten.....

On leaving the funeral of a distant relative, the bereaved spouse shook my hand at the door, saying thank you for coming......

Quick as a flash, I opened my gob and out popped the words......

It's a pleasure........

Aaaaaaaaargh....................

Nothing wrong with that MBH. In other words - it`s a pleasure to be able to pay your last respects.

What would have offended is - "please let me know if he/she gets any better"

You should have seen the look on her face when I enquired about her pending baby!

There was a very apt piece of advice in Viz (I think) a good few years ago:

"Never, EVER, ask a woman id she's pregnant, unless you can actually see a baby emerging from her body."

Went to one a month ago, in deepest Wales. Met a long-time friend of my uncle who turned out to be a former RAF Group Captain who flew Spitfires and Typhoons in WW2. Worth the petrol just for that.
