I think they should be scrapped. Over 3 Billion pounds is paid into the scheme per year.
I dont watch TV, I just dont have time. Praps 2 hours a month tops which means Im paying more than a fiver an hour when I do watch it. I do watch DVDs though and spend £thousands of them yearly.
For people in the lower income bracket, £126 (or whatever the yearly Liscence fee is?) is a couple of days work. For that price, they could go digital.
Does anyone realistically see it coming to an end?

um actualy I have and TV in the US is great loads of channels and shows. Ad brakes are a little annoying but not worth paying £120 to remove.
Also the US produces some of my favriote shows. The BBC hardly brings us the worlds best radio and TV. imo it produces utter tripe (apart from maybe top gear

Well looking at the BBC with its "lets promote the latest program crap style advert" to cut the program down from 1/2 hour to around 24 mins to fit in the adverts after selling to UKTV network. Also there is too much product placement now, at one time everything was masked with black tape, now it is only masked if they do not pay a fee for promotion (ready steady cook?). Also checkout Sony TV's everywhere. Another thing is "coming up in the next half hour" and the constant repeat of what they have just shown! Again to be edited out for commercial TV.
Err I do not listen to the radio so kill that now, and licence fee for what BBC Parliment (sp?) coo yes fun.
I would not miss the BBC at all, they spend far too much money on one or two programs ie Eastenders (Deadenders), if the programme is sinking kill it off FFS!
BBC died in the 90's when it was then farmed out to independent suppliers ie Bazell productions (changing rooms, room makeover, need a new room, room for ........get the picture)

I'm of the opinion that you should only pay for what you use. However as has been pointed out several times on here, it raises quite a lot of wonga for the Gov't. Now some folk will try to baffle you with bullshit about how the whole amount is 'hypothecated' and so on, but let me ask you (and them) this: what other private organisation in the UK has the ability and resources to pursue alleged non-payers by turning up on your doorstep and demanding your personal details, effectively ask you to pay for something they can't prove you've used, and get you a large FINE for?
Sounds to me like they have approval from on high, which can only mean that the Gov't stands to lose money...
The alternative, of course, is that they would find another way to raise all that lovely wonga: more income tax, anyone? Let's say 30 million households at £100 a year; three billion quid or so, just to make the 6 o'clock news and 'Last of the summer wine'?

I think the BBC is terrific value for money. A choice of entertainment 24 hours a day, wherever you are.
Better than a ciggy and a half or a seventh of a pint of bitter which is about all 32pence will buy you.

I've said it in the past and I'll say it again. They would never scrap the LICENCE. You'll just pay and get NOTHING. At least the BBC gives you at least 5 channels at any time of the day. Perhaps nobody noticed that the governments intention is NOT to scrap it but to give other broadcasters a slice of it.
What people seem to be forgetting is that commercial television is not 'free'. It is paid for every time you buy a product that has been advertised on television.
I'd be willing to put money on that cost being higher than the TV license.
For all those who say it should be scrapped because they don't want the BBC, well I would like the option of not paying an advertising surcharge on stuff inthe supermarket, because I may not watch commercial televion.
Oh, and there is absolutely NO product placement on the BBC, every Beeb shoot I do great pains are taken to cover up unnecessary logos. Sony monitors are used because they make the best broadcast monitors, so thats a no-brainer.
