PH massive,
how do your kids fare at school
is mainstream appropriate can they cope.
Does it teach them well

and those of you with special needs kids. does the school or indeed the SENCO help you to address your childs problems or dont they want to know?

It is my opinion at present that mainstream school is appropriate for most children but if you fall eiter way of the boundry then you WILL accomodate problems.

all my children are high intelligence one is autistic
school is becoming a battle field and a nightmare

:)

I've met the kids - so have plenty of other PHers. Do you require a testimonial to their qualities or will you take it as read?

There is a point here though.

I have no idea as to the intelligence level of Jessica's children. They may be savants and polymaths for all I know.

But it is true that many parents overestimate the intelligence of their offspring through pride.

The majority of kids are of around average intelligence of course (IQ 106 in the UK). Although contentious, high intelligence is around 130+. "Genius" level kicks in at 150, which less than 1% of the population can attain.

Whether Jessica's children will fare well at state mainstream education depends upon a wide range of factors: The school, the child's personality and inherent motivation, parental support, and innate intelligence.

There are many excellent mainstream schools who have good gifted and talented provision.

Jessica, have your children been placed on the gifted and talented register?

Dont be paranoid, I dont have a problem with you.

How about all the parents of "normal" kids on here. Im sure each and every one is special in some way.
But if you can just step away from your world for a moment. Think how dull it is when you overhear someone doing the "little johnny this, little johnny that speech".

Maybe my comments came on harsh but you dont have mainstream kids, so why the hell are you posting about them except to post that yours are not?

I DO have mainstream kids
I have five beautiful children
one is autistic(gifted)
one is artistic and mainstream
two are ? autistic but intelligent (normal)
one is very mainstream

hope that answers it.
I dont pipe on about my kids
I was asking a generic question
of all parents
I am a director of a charity that helps parents whatever their needs
I was not being selfish

anyone who knows me will tell you that.

Is it genuine autism - which is very difficult for a mainstream school to accomodate, or is it aspergers? Or is ADHD?

Who diagnosed your children Jessica? Do they have statements of special needs? Are they on the G&T register?

ok Mr psychologist

In your opinion
does intergration of special needs children work in mainstream>?
and when i say special needs i am not implying intelligence or not
some children have a special need because they cannot read at the level expected for their age
some because they have Autism, cerebral Palsy,ADD,ADHD.
some because they are dear blind,or have a colostomy bag fitted
I am sure that some of these children can be intergrated into mainstream, butsome most def cannot
and when that happens boy do you have to fight for your rights

In response to your question I will give my opinion.

Yes, children with special needs can most certainly be catered for in mainstream eduction, but it very much depends upon exactly what those needs are.

You haven't told me what assessments have been made of your children.

As I said above, if it is genuine Autism, then generally the child will need specialist eduction at a school which specialises in this.

If, however, the child has aspergers, then many can be very well catered for in state schools.

If your children are of high intelligence, and placed on the Gifted and Talented register, then a good school with a proactive G&T policy and provision can be very effective.

There are many organisations that can help, but you haven't said what the diagnosis of your children is.

Maybe, just maybe the post was about asking if anyone has any relevant, real advice on the subject.

Just because someone says something it doesn't mean they are here to boast about it although that is what everyone seems to assume these days.

It might have been mentioned before but what does that have to do with anything. Every thread is going to be seen by different people and who knows what might turn up as a result. Dismissive, unconstructive and argumentive comments on the other hand are most definitely not what was being looked for!

Nah, the fella had a point. This isn't the first thread that seems to be "My kids are genius's, schools are crap: Discuss".

In answer to the original question however: My brother had/has Dyspraxia, the teachers did nothing to help and he didn't get him use of a laptop computer despite them promising him one for 5 years. Now they seem to be throwing iBooks and loads of stuff at people with extremely mild dyselxia - there doesn't seem to be much justice sometimes and i expect that quality of help for kids that are abnormal in some way or other is highly variable.

I don't really know what the thread's about though; if they find school that much of a problem simply remove them and teach at home. If they're that clever it won't make a difference to a-levels/degree results. If they don't find the social side of school a problem then what is exactly? If you expect the school to push your kids or help them with learning beyond the average pace of a class then you expect a little too much of the current education system, don't worry about it as if they're bright they can learn at home. I don't think i ever really learnt anything at school other than how to throw a good punch and it's done me no harm, innit.

Cheers,
Rob.

It isn't about pushing them beyond the average pace of the class. The problem is that such kids are being deliberately ostracised and classed as trouble makers because they can't keep up. The pace they learn at is entirely dependent on the teaching methods used. Failing to help the kids at all is the problem, treating them like the lowest level of scum because they need help. The fact that these kids are actually brighter than the average is the real tragedy.

The schools' general tactic is to push the kids until they break and then exclude them on grounds of bad behaviour - which means they are knowingly and willingly forcing the situation. They don't want such kids on their lists unless there is a line through it. Teaching from home is not the way to go either - most parents, while willing are hardly qualified to teach an "average" kid let alone someone with special educational needs. The state is obliged to provide the education but if you choose to take the child out of the normal educational system then you have chosen to release them of that obligation (unless they suspect you are not performing the task yourself - a whole 'nother set of arguments again). Why should it be down to an uninformed parent though to force the situation and get the authorities to do what they are paid to do in the first place. Every school is supposed to have at least one teacher qualified to assist in this matter - both of identifying and arranging special needs education.

Ok...as someone who is still technically in main stream education I'll give my POV.

I have an IQ of 132 so highly intelligent according to alexkp!!! I think my 1st primary school let me down quite a lot. More time was spent dealing with the trouble makers than encouraging those with talents. Maybe some sort of class split would be appropriate to nurture the tallents and intelligence of both groups using different techniques although a lot of social psychologists probably wouldn't agree!

The high school setting system did help however to push yourself above the set one standard it was after school lessons (which isn't fair on you as that compromises social life and living as a child).

College and Uni are totally different. I think with those it's a lot more self directed so you get out what you put in.
