Just phoned up the local council with a query about my council tax.

The person on the other end was based in the uk, in the council offices.
They could speak and understand english (and I believe were english).
They new exactly what was going on and provided me with everything I needed to know, in a very polite and very friendly manner.
The phone was answered by a person, I got no nasty on hold music and no menus.

It made the phone call an absolute pleasure. How often do we come off the phone to someone and feel better than before we made the call?

¿Acerca de qué habla usted? ¡En Inglaterra hay demasiado inglés! Yo no entiendo lo que usted dice

I phoned up BT the other day to find out why my ADSL was still pottering along a 500k when all new customers were getting a 2mb connection for the same speed.

I ended up talking to a humourless pidgin English speaking Indian who told me his name was Elvis.

Elvis Patel? Yeh, right. Sounds plausible.

Anyway, I told him my name was Micheal Mouse....

My old man phoned the relevant number to ask if Tower Bridge road was subject to the congestion charge. After reassuring my dad that he was calling a London office, the crackly indian lady on the other end of the line actually asked him if the said road was IN London!
