Council planning dodgyness-Legal?

Bit of fuss happening out there in the village this morning. Some good old "golf with Rolfe" has resulted in some rather dubious decision making from "Corruptadon DC", basically the village is a conservation area (good reason too) and has a "No building whatsoever happens outside this line". So a property developer forwards plans to Planning Dept, with altered line, planning dept consider application and give go ahead. Not only is this blatantly corrupt, the nature of the building is totally out of context with the village, in a prominent spot and violates loads of their own rules, access, etc?
Viallge meeting held with developler/planning officer and the nature of this line shifting discussed. Unanimous vote of NO! and still it seems to be going ahead. You hear people talk of corrupt planning departments and this folks is real stuff! Is there any way to challenge their decision?

This happens everywhere. The centre of our village/small town was decimated by the building of a new Tesco.The steel/glass structure really blended in with all the other stone built properties.
Can't help but think that someone on the council had a good holiday on that one.

Yes you can object.
One of the girls who works for me her husband is a planning exec who works all over the Country advising on issues like this. He gets involved when the matter goes to court, but she on Holiday so I can;t find out any further info.

If it goes ahead you can still have lots of fun by moving all the markings. In my early teens we spent 6 months going on Ninja missions to change all the markings for an unpopular bypass that ended up ruining a village. Looking back it was a pretty daft thing to do but it was fun at the time.
Dad is thinking about putting in for permission to build a big mosque (for cars). We had a laugh about this as you can't even put the wrong slates on your roof (conservation area). They couldn't turn down a mosque, surely?
Back to this business, the village is well laid out and full of quality housing. Matey has a plot which he plans to build 8 semis on (virtually touching), it will look like a crop of genital warts. Once more, the plot (technically outside the build line) touches 3 adjacent properties. Of course, the bloke stands to make a £1M+ profit, so things like planning officers and no build lines are mere technicalities.

My local Council have recently allowed developers to knock down two important edwardian/victorian houses to be replaced with modern crap!
One is on the edge of a conservation area and the next door house is one of the most historic in the area.
The other is my old family home which was the oldest and most imposing building along a particular stretch of road. Now it's gone to be replaced with new build which will never last 100 years as the previous building had.
I know that Victorian is not an architecturally important or outstanding building style, like mock tudor or jacobean, but if you don't preserve it then you lose the history of the area.
No amount of objection has prevented either project from going ahead.

I had an extension built onto my old house a few years ago and had some problems with the local planning dept. It wasnt a conservation area, but I was warned about strict controls on my road due to covenants on the land opposite. Not a major issue, but needed to make sure that the house was "in fitting" with the area. Basically this was just to keep the area posh more than anything else.
I had to source specialist roof tiles of the exact same type for the extension at a cost of 3x the normal one. Not a problem as it was budgeted for. Planning bloke then started to kick up a fuss as they were exactly the same shade (the house they had come from was in the shade and hence didnt have the same weathered look!). He was even threatening to reject the certification on this basis......
That was until I lost it and explained that the development of 5 "executive style homes with double garages and gravel drives" just 5 houses up the road used completely new materials with new bricks and new roof tiles - completely un-fitting in the area and looked stupid against all of the other houses on the road..... He dropped his objection and moved on. Strangely "loosing" my certificate when the house was being sold - costing me another £50 to sort out....

I looked at a plot of land and had some discussiond with a few people and it seemed to be that some money should go into development of the access to help with the planning for the property. It was a substancial (sp?)amount so didn't go any futher. The access development was not explained any futher.
