Where's good on the Algarve? I always went to Vale Do Lobo as a kid, but now I'm paying!
I want somewhere that has a bit of life, but is mainly quietish with excellent beaches.
I'm thinking of going easyjet/easyhotels, as it's cheap as chips and a lot of the operators seem to use easyjet now anyway.
Recommendations on good online hotel bookings welcome as well

I lived in the algarve for a while during the summer, the best fit to your requirements sounds like alvor - it's a little fishing village that has been developed a bit, but 20 years ago there were more donkeys owned than cars and it's not much different now 
lots of family friendly bars, lots of interesting little hokey local shops, lots of village life going on independently of the tourist trade which is nice to observe sometimes, and an absolutely glorious gorgeous huge beautiful sandy beach
I loved it there but I only stayed for a month before moving to praia da rocha about 7km eastwards down the coast which is very 'chav' although there are a very few moneyed bits which are not so bad. oh and an excellent casino
if you want more info on where to go and what to see once you've booked in email me and I can give you a guide of places to go and see all around the algarve - I spent a good deal of time belting the Ginetta around the region searching out interesting and exciting places to pass time until the bars opened I can give you a good guide to restaurants that are worth it, and little non touristy bars to go to when you're tired of the hassle and also for when you only want to pay 1.50euro for a caneca of super bock as opposed to the 'bargain' price of 3.00euro in the bars
oh and on another note, don't drink super bock, it's piss. it's the portuguese equivalent of carling, try sagres (made just down the coast to the west) as it's generally regarded as the best, followed by tagus (made in lisboa).

That looks lovely, but I've booked now... All through sleazy jet. Doddle and I'm well looking forward to some sun now
I think I know where I'm going next year
I just came back from the Algarve last Sunday, had a great time. I stayed at ''Club Alto Da Colina'' in an area called Balaia.
We booked with first choice & couldn't fault the place. It has a nearby beach, & if you take a 15-20 minute walk you hit an area called the strip full of plenty of places to eat & drink. Also has various shops.
Or you can take a taxi which costs just under 4 euros, which takes you straight to the strip.

Nope, my sixth. Always went to Vale Do Lobo as a kid and I loved it, so I'm really looking forward to those golden beaches
As we are just outside Albefuira, I think a day trip will be in order
