The reviews are out and finally it seems that George Lucas has made a new star wars movie that is not solely designed to sell toys and computer games.

Sounds like good stuff. TBH I think that if this is as good as I think it's going to be, the Star Wars 'trilogy' will be episodes 3, 4 & 5. The Phantom Nemace was utter tripe, Attack Of The Clones was fun tripe but still tripe, and Return Of The Jedi just feels an unsatisfactory end after the drama of The Empire Strikes Back.
I prefer the idea of the Star Wars series to revolve around Darth Vader as a villain - beginning with his creation and ending with his revalation to Luke rather than his death - which was a load of saccharine rubbish. Episodes 3, 4 & 5 are films for everyone. 1, 2 & 6 are films for kids.

The real first review was from Kevin Smith (Clerks, Dogma, etc.) who got invited to a private screening by Lucas. He's an uber SW geek, so if he's impressed it must be good.

I would agree with your assessment of the first two of the 'new' star wars movies-though Attack of the Clones is far superior to the awful first one.
However Return of the Jedi is both good and bad-it shows in places the childishness that destroys the Phantom Menace, but other parts are very good.
and it's inclusion does show the full cycle for Darth Vader-his descent into evil and his ultimate redemption.

I suppose, but what's a more powerful way to finish off your 'space opera' - Luke coming to terms with who his father is, or some animated teddy bears having a fireworks party and everyone living happily ever after?
I see what you mean about Return Of The Jedi, but I like my films somewhat darker.

However I love Attack of the Clones and to be totally honest don't mind Ep1 either. Jar Jar drives me mad though.
Star wars isn't meant to be sensible, or clever, or 'grown up.'
The problem Ep1 faced from the beginning was that all the people who were so excited about it were far too keen on analysing all it's faults and making all sorts of 'clever' observations like they would a Kubrick film.
They might as well not have watched it and just come to the conclusion that it wasn't as good as the originals from the start; and why would it be? They were children when they first saw them, and therefore enjoyed them for what they are... entertaining movies! Nothing more, and nothing less. A child will always enjoy a film like star wars far more than a 30 something world-weary adult, they have the active imagination and ability to forget about any faults and just get lost in the wacky universe Lucas has created.
People who dislike Ep1 so much and dismiss it as not being Star Wars are just remembering their initial reaction and love for A New Hope, not the actual movies. If it had been the other way round and Eps1,2 and 3 were the originals, then i'm sure a new Hope would have provoked the same reaction.

The first 3 movies were all good IMHO, ROTJ had it's moments, Jabba getting wasted by Leia in that outfit, Luke fighting Vader, that huge dogfight at the end, seeing Vaders' face - the Ewoks are crap but they're a relatively small part of the film. ESB is my favourite of the first 3 by a country mile.
Menace was crap, it hardly even felt like a Star Wars film, AOTC was much better but still somewhat lacking in substance.
Looking forward to the new film, from the trailer it looks very good.

What you say is partly true MilfordKong
However Ep1 is like watching a disney film, it is a kiddies movie for the under 10's
The orginal Star Wars trilogy is far darker and bloodier.

Isn't KS part of the production team involved in the upcoming Star Wars tv show? May cloud his judgment a litte if it's true.
Saying that, everything I've read/heard/seem about ROTS so far does indeed suggest it's going to be a fantastic film.

No clever observations from me! It was tedious self indulgent crap about characters I didn't care about (or hated) involved in a story that made no sense.
At least the second one had some decent action sequences in it
If anyone want's me to do a PH review then let me know because as I mentioned I'm going to the premier on Monday, so I'll let you all know how it is on Tuesday which will be the day after the premier on Monday which I'm going to by the way... the premier that is... on monday....which I'm going to 
see...
