How do they work this out?

Assume this... If you had a test tube outside which collected rainfall, you could see how much rain it had collected simply by measuring the height?

So, you do the same excercise with a sauce pan. It finishes raining and you're ready to measure the height of the collected water.

Here's the tricky bit..

The sauce pan measurement will be less than the test tube as there is a bigger area to spread the rainfall round.

um no, its in mm per surface area, if both have verticle sides then both should collect the same relative amount in depth.

it could be a test tube, pan or lake.
