Munich to Nice route

Planning on taking the S2000 (arrives this week!) to the Oktoberfest and Nice during September .

Can anyone recommend a route - preferably with a great mountain pass in it! Also any hostels en-route, we fancy taking our time and making it 2 days

Gruffy seems to know his way around there.

I`ve done bits of the journey in a truck, so my route would not really be suitable ..........E45 down through Austria, E64 to Milan (don`t forget a diversion to Monza - well worth it), on to Turin, down to Savna and along the coast.

Get a decent map and look at some of the lovely squiggly lines over the mountains - got to be worth a try.

Assuming you are coming back to Blighty from Nice, you MUST make time to come back via the "route Napoleon" (sign-posted by a brown roadsign with Napoleonic hat logo) from Cannes to Grenoble, via Gap and Grasse etc - its 'kin tastic, full of hairpins and mountain passes with plentiful cafe's and scenic viewing points. It only adds about 2 hours to the journey but should not be missed.

You could include it in the route down but it would add to the journey considerably and involve cutting through Switzerland.

Fill up with gas before leaving Cannes, 'cos service stations are not that plentiful.......

puggit - Liebchen - there are lot of variations - but shall try to give one or two ideas which you can work on und adapt....as you will then be able to surf tourist offices und so was to plan to taste und time.

From Munich - take local roads past Schauinsland (Germany's highest mountain ) und drop into Austria via Seefeld. From here follow Inn valley to Inssbruck. Ist toppest coffee/cake shop along this road

You could then explore Innsbruck You could take the old wooden tram up too mountain village. Ist much better than driving as this shakes every bone in body Yhis ist where you find the cable cars to top of mountain where you get toppest views of Innbruck und suroundings.

From Innsbruck - you could take Brenner Pass to Vipiteno (Sterzing). From here you could take local roads though Sarntaler Alp National Park to Merano then South to Bolzano und Trudner national Park. From here - you follow to Garda und then take main autostrade to Turin und follow Alpi Maritimi local roads down to coastal route.

Or from Innsbruck you could follow the Lechtaler Alpen route und take local scenic roads to Maggiore und then Turin und Alpi Maritimi routes or even via French Alpes Maritimes...

There are many alternatives ...und this ist merely to give few ideas....

Ist better to do this on way back home...as it ist a good one. Und rounds off trip nicely before he hits boring French motorways to the North. I'd stop in Dijon or Beaune on way wack - both are interesting und he can stock his cellar

The views going south bound of the approaching Med are truly georgous.....but either way its a great drive.
