People are completely stupid.........

He lies.
He deceives.
He raises taxes.
He made a mess of the NHS.
He spent billions in public projects nobody wanted.
He put our soldiers in Iraq when nobody wanted them there.
He doesn't listen to the people of this country.
So my question is, why did people vote for Tony bLIAR?

No... But the question to be asked is do you want majority government? PR in our situation won't deliver that as in terms of share the big three parties are pretty close. FPTP is flawed but in general it does deliver a stable government. Look at Italy in the 80's and 90's - that is what happens when PR goes bad....

May be so but fptp doesn't return a government that reflects the country's wishes.I don't know what the answer is to be honest.

John Major's last government was elected on 32% of the vote, and there wasn't a single Tory MP in Scotland.
We discussed this last week JL; remember, when I was branded a racist?
Our electoral system is the whole problem, nothing will change until we change the system; only then will all the parties be able to truly represent all the people and prevent extremist or unpopular policies from being forced on the country against the greater good.

Excuse me he was not elected with 32% of the vote.
You're right JL it says on the Beeb that this is the smallest winning share of the vote ever so Major must have had more than 36%

Thanks FWD-some people seem to think that if you state lies often enough people will believe them.
42% is a respectable share of the vote-and a mandate for government.
Why does everyone cite Italy when they want to argue against PR?
EVERY European country uses some form of PR system and EVERY European country has certainly not had the types of problems Italy has had over the years.
I actually think making sure you have a parliamentary system that RESTRAINS the weilding of power by governments is a good thing overall.

You could have that with a more powerful upper house (perhaps elected through PR) you do not need to change the House of Commons.
