Ray explores the skills needed to live in this remote environment, from making a boat out of willow and buffalo skin, to preserving meat and berries Great!, a new series. A great series. I saw him do a talk recently, a great story about that buffalo boat he made.

After he finished with it, a local museum had asked if they could have it, so he strapped it to the roof of his landcruiser and drove into town.

In the middle of the off-hunting season, this white 4x4, with a massive buffalo hide, dripping blood down the side and a tail dangling down the rear window drives down the high street!

Local cop pulls them, and says "What in the hell have you got here?"

So the two english blokes in the car reply

"A boat!"

To think that things like that are going on in the world still. Every time i watch that program i learn something new and i'm continually astounded at the skill of Ray and his sympathy to the surroundings.
Definately going to buy this series too.

The most important thing in the world is someone who knows what they are doing!

Ray's programmes are the Oasis in a desert of dross. The guy makes addictive TV, I could never tire of watching his series' it's good to watch someone who knows his stuff and is able to speak lucidly and enthusiastically on his subject. Whilst there are series like his on TV, it gives one hope that crap like Big brother and all the other reality and wannabe programs have not totally taken over, and that there really are people out there watching who have a brain!

Respect to Mr. Mears. Him and that bloke did a seriously good job on this boat, and i think it's really cool that he is actually putting it to the use it was intended for. Respect to the french fur traders as well.

Have a look here at the clips. first one is 55mb which took 15 mins to download on my 512mbs but well worth it.
I ordered it from the Woodlore site but you may find it cheaper elsewhere.

I'll take it you'd get BBC Scotland same as we get all the other BBC regions hidden away in the 900 channel range.
It's worth noting that BBC Scotland appear to be a week behind in in the new Bushcraft series in case one is missed.

Mears was in the chopper at the time. I would imagine it will be in the next epsiode, he said it happened in the states.

Apparently he cut his filming short in America as he "Loves the country, but don't like the politics"

I enjoyed this, apart from the beaver trapping and skinning as I'm a bit too squeamish.

But I missed bits, how did he get the buffalo skin out of season.

I found it quite a sad episode as once again it highlighted how badly the native american indians were treated after they had helped the settlers and trappers.

Though the 90 year old trapper talking about his sex like was v amusing
