Cheap Wood

Need some cheap wood planks.. sort of like scaffolders planks, does'nt need to be in great condition cosmetically.

Any ideas as too the best place to get something like this.. or what other wood i could try..

Why not speak to a scaffolding company?

They should be able to tell you what happens to old ones...

What do you need it for?? If you want scaffold planks then Jewson does (or did) them.

if i was to not use scaffolding planks.. what wood would i use to bridge a 1 meter gap with no sag?

Old railway sleepers maybe.

Edited to say - didn't see the bit about use in a roof support. I wouldn't go the cheap option then, get proper planking from Jewsons/B&Q, or it might come down on your head.

Plasterboard will sag.

Basically it has to hang between RSJ's each 4 meters long.. They are a meter apart, there are 8 RSJ's = alot of wood!

For the top layer we have welded in little struts to take the weight, but the bottom layer needs to be flush so we can't do this.

Thinking laterally.. why not add some decent noggins at right angles across in between the RSJ's (3"x2" ?) and then plasterboard it.. quick and cheap

Best go to a proper wood yard then. They can advise on the best solution. Should be a lot cheaper than the likes of B&Q .etc. as well.

Scafold planks can be bought from jewsons, got mine for 10 quid each, they even deliver. I would try covers in aldershot, north lane. They are far better at delivering than jewsons.

gone up from about £5 a pop since changing rooms etc use them lots!

Best bet is chipboard, but not std boards.
You can get waterproof about 1" thick which should do.

For a smoother finish, marine grade MDF. Waterproof again, so won't sag.

B & Q do packs of loft boards, they are reasonably priced and span the space between joists.
