...still mystified!

What's to stop me claiming to be, say, Hancock, Anthony A. of 3 Railway Cuttings, East Cheam?

Indeed, popping back later in the day, and....

In this day and age of potential ballot fraud, I don't need to show any identification, or even have the ballot "invitation" card with me.

Whilst I know that that's all caught up with the fact that we live in a free country, it's still mystifying, isn't it?

...now I didn't say that, although I can see how you might think that's what I meant But that's not a (or the only) solution.

Branding?

That was meant as a joke, but on reflection what`s wrong with a u/v stamp on the hand? Ah - School Discos!

How about this I took my balot card with me when I went to vote. The card has my name and address on it, I handed the girl the card and she asked me to confirm my name and address. EERrrr its written in front of you.

Mystified, pi55ed off and totally dischuffed. Our voting cards were to be delivered at the weekend and mine didn't arrive so called the council and they said i hadn't registered at the new property and it was tough luck (surely they do a check against council tax lists etc)- i can't vote in the election because it takes a month to process. I have lived in my jurisdiction for the last 6 years and England all my life, probably more english than 50% of people who will be voting. They said a letter would have been sent to my old address (fat lot of good that is but more to the point, the tenants would be breaking the law there if they opened my post so lose lose situation) Nothing I can do now but thought I would have a quick rant.

Speaking of potential vote-rigging, does anyone else find it strange that they only provide pencils for marking your choice(s)? Furthermore, the electoral role number was also pencilled in on the ballot papers...

Did they tear it out of the book in the right place?

At my PS they didn't know exactly what they were doing and tried to tear out the stub as well!!!

Ah. Now you mention it, I think it may have been just the stub it was written on (was a bit distracted by my daughter trying to grab the papers!)

A guy with a labour rosette on asked me for my polling card number! So i told him to piss off...... is this normal practice, what did the cretin want it for?

Didn't realise how enjoyable it was to tell a complete stranger to piss off! must do it more often!

That was a nice intelligent response from you

Would it not have been more constructive to have voiced your concerns with him whilst other voters entered the PS?

The reason they ask for your details (and each party do this) is so that they can call on those who haven't voted yet and encourage them to do so.

I went out and voted with my wife this morning. Similar experience - was asked my address, then went down the list (which I could plainly see), asked to confirm my name (I could read all the names on the sheet) she put a pencil mark against my name (did not cross it through - and did not ask for any proof of identity) then I was given my ballot paper (the other person gave my ballot number from her list) which was noted on the stub. I penciled in a cross and posted the ballot....

Does this seem right for a free and fair election, not to prove identity, have names and ballot numbers clearly visible, and only use pencils when countries that use far more secure voting mechanisms are branded as corrupt?

I got some guy in a purple rosette asking for my number as well - before I had a chance to ask him why? he'd read it and noted it down anyway....

Very strange experience.

I meant piss off in a "go away leave me alone" way, i didn't literally say piss off! I do have some manners! I hardly see how prying into someones private voting habits and then harrasing them at a later date constitutes part of the democratic process.
