Resignation Letters ...
Discussion
I've only ever resigned once. I went straight to the MD, spoke to him face-to-face and told him exactly why I was leaving. It was a very small company though. I would always advocate being honest. It did me a favour as when the person who was the reason for my resignation left, I was invited back straight away and negotiated a 50% pay rise
Honesty is always the best policy.
It may also happen that if you are resigning because you are not happy with pay and/or conditions, that you may be offered improved terms of employment, conditions and pay.
Best of luck!

You aren't required to give any reasons.
The following is quite sufficient:
"Dear XXXX,
Please take this letter as formal notice of my resignation from my post at XXXX.
In accordance with my contract I will continue to work at XXXX for another month, my last working day being XXXX, unless requested to leave earlier."
If you want to be more creative then see www.i-resign.com/uk/home/ for examples.

I always find that if I discuss my reason why I am leaving with the highest person you have access too, that you can always go back.
Don't burn the bridges.
Absolutely.
The full version of my letter actually included this paragraph:
"As you are no doubt aware, I have been in the process of buying a property in Basingstoke with my girlfriend and it is my intention to move there and begin work as a contractor." which left them feeling like I was only leaving because I was moving away. No bridges burnt there.
Legally now your resignation letter can be interpreted as a grievance. Therefore choose what you say carefully. The law now allows you to raise a grievance once you have left a company and your employer should conduct an exit interview and ask you if there is anything you would like to discuss with them before you leave. This then covers their back.

i have just had an exit questionnaire sent to me on email, people are too busy to conduct an interview.
i think they are too busy employing new people.

I start a new job in a little over a weeks time!!!! Hurrah...
But, had the exit interview beforehand. Complete waste of time to be honest. I was leaving and the personnel manager was being made redundant - kinda turned into a doom-and-gloom discussion on the direction of our respective careers!!! Was funny though - never had an exit interview like that before.
Dear Ted,
it is with regret that I have to offer my resignation as full time PH "whats new" refresher and snide poster. The last 7 months of almost full time occupation of the site have been challenging, but I feel the time has come for me to try something new, maybe in the paid sector of the work force.
I wish all my fellow colleagues all the best with their posting, and maybe I can still frequent here on a part time basis.
Yours respectfully,
Fer
