You Wouldn't Try and Run Your Car on Milkshakes...
Discussion
So why do we put it into our bodies?
This is something that has interested me for quite some time.
It seems even more odd when you consider that petrol heads who, generally speaking, have a love for most things mechanical and pretty much all things internal combustion, don't seem to maintain their bodies to the same extent for which they care for their cars.
People and engines are pretty similar really - Stuff goes in, gets burned, creates energy, enables us to function.
I had a massive curry last night and, for the first time in ages, I realised afterwards that I didn't really enjoy it as much as I expected to. This was partly due to how I felt after having eaten it but anyway...
Maybe it's because I watched 'Supersize Me' the other day, but I'm really starting to see the need to treat myself more like a well oiled machine than just a body that I use and abuse, if you know what I mean.
Anybody else got any thoughts on the subject (apart from "You're talking out of your arse, Dan!" and anything along those lines)?
Bit of a random one I know, but it's all good!

No, I agree.
A couple of summers ago, I found myself piling on weight and I went from 12 stone to 14 stone plus - not good. I realised that the culprits were a mixture of nasty kebabs and lots of cheap and nasty lager, coupled with not enough exercise.
So I set out an exercise regime, kept to it, and switched to different drinks. A few pints of ale of a night, or a single pint of lager in the afternoon wasn't so bad, but when I was going out and drinking a lot, I've switched to spirits and wines - same effect, less volume and you can sip, rather than gulp, it. I got 'blokeish' ridicule from my mates until they realised that they were putting on weight too and ended up doing the same as me.
So far as takeaways go, they're really bad for you, especially eating one then going straight to bed. As a result, I've given up getting stuff after a night on the razz, and just get toast and water when I get home. If I have to have 'takeaway', I order a proper meal from the local Chinese or Indian and eat it at tea-time, then at least it plugs a gap, rather than adding excess food to my diet.
I won't touch McDonald's or Burger King with a bargepole. The only fast food outlet I'll go to if I have to is KFC, simply because there's only so much you can disguise as chicken
Milkshakes are a no-no, supersizing is a no-no, and a milkshake is a dessert, not a drink.

Milkshakes are a no-no, supersizing is a no-no, and a milkshake is a dessert, not a drink.I used to be an exercise nutter. 3 times a week in the gym building muscle mass, about 100 miles a week on the bike keeping fit. I was a damn fit and healthy guy.
Once I started in this bloody job, all that stopped, and now I'm about 4 stones overweight. I'm fecking sick of it, I really am.
However, 3 weeks ago I started dieting. So far I've lost about 8 pounds, and its easy. I intend to continue until I'm right back down the the size where I can go for a swim without feeling embarrassed.
Watch this space tbh.

Nowhere near enough. 6 years ago, (before I got a 'sensible' job) I was cycling 12 miles a day round trip to work, going to the gym 3 times a week and swimming at least twice a week. Now, if I get to the gym once a week its unusual, and it really doesn't do much good unless I'm there 3 times a week, even though 90% of the time my diet is pretty good..
I need to bin the gym membership and take up running I guess..

I know what you mean... at the moment my body is kindof like a new rep mobile... I don't really care what goes into it, cos it'll cope with anything at this stage of it's life, but If I miss-treat it for too long then It'll catch up with me and will be worthless in the future.
wow... that reminds me of the "autotrader-describe yourself" thread.

The world needs cynical people. Keep up the good work.
If it does some good, who cares about whether or not the guy did it to get rich.
Well i go cycling running and walking (with a pack) so i exercise fairly frequently.
Resting heart rate is around 45 slightly up from 41 a few months back.
Think ill go have a run in a bit using it as an excuse to go stick my "Vote Conservative" posters all over that thick labour gobshites' huge poster up the road......

Sounds just like me!
At uni I rowed and did lots of gym work (5 days a week, twice a day was not uncommon) - I was about 100kgs but not fat (6' so was fairly well built).
All of a sudden I graduated and started commuting to London. For a good year I wasn't able to put in anywhere near as much exercise as I was used to - and consiquently thought of the little I could do as pointless and a waste of time. I weighed myself a few months ago and I was 100kgs but much fatter, and much weaker!
Now I train about 4 times a week but don't go mad - but I have totally changed my diet - I have almost given up meat in favour of fish and don't eat carbs after 6pm. The weight is falling off, but I doubt I'll ever be able to put the muscle back on - but at least I wont be a fat lad anymore either (sausage-like finger crossed)
Max
I went up to 18 stone and 42" waist when i was 24. Went on the Atkins diet for 5 months and took up karate. im now 13.5 stone, 36 waist and feeling great for it.
Gym didnt work for me as it was boring and other diets I found crap as i couldnt stick to them
Different things for different people - see what feels right for you and it will work.

i dont think he is "cynical" though.
forget that MacDs maybe some meglacorporate company spanning 4 universes - but how would you like it if you owned a company that made widgets and a film maker looking to become rich stuffs 97 widgets up his bum and pronounces to the world how harmful your widgets are - and look at the way he walks with 97 widgets in his rectum.
quite simply - you shouldnt of stuff them up there in the first place.
and the only people who are interested in such a strange thing quite simply are into anal gazing.
which nicely sums "supersize me".
another ducumetary was made by a woman who was pissed off at Supersize Me. She eat the whole MacDs range of foods for a month.
after 1 month she lost wieght. hmmm, not news worthy i suspect.
Lost muscle mass but gained fat probably.
Muscle weighs more than fat.
There's nothing wrong with being cynical though - Usally I'm one of the most cynical people I know.
However, in the case of Supersize me, I find it difficult to discredit the documentary. Sure, not many people in their right mind would actually go on such a crazy diet, but what puts me off is not how much food he ate during the filming, but the sheer amount of unhealthy stuff (mainly incredible amounts of sugar) that was contained in the food.
That's what's putting me off.
McDonalds is an easy target, but then it's an easy target for a pretty good reason IMO. The guy might have made alot of money from Supersize me, but you can't put a price on your own health and when something comes along that makes you stop and think about what you actually put into your body, and what it could do to your health, it's worth taking on board.
