Anybody else watching the UFC on bravo tonight?

It's only had the first fight on but it was one of the best fights I've seen in a long time. When I did Shotokan I met some really serious fighters ( I reckon a couple could fight professionally) but the UFC is on another level. The only thing I've seen that compares is the K1. The spirit some of the fighters show is immense.

It's also been interesting to see how Mixed Martial Arts fighting is evolving. When it started it was mainly people from one discipline that fought (for example a Judo guy versus a Karate guy, Aikido vs Ju-Jitsu), but now most of the fighters have studied a much more diverse range of arts.

Just something that I found interesting this evening.

I have done a couple of training seminars with guys involved in UFC, altogether another level.
A couple of mates trained with Royce Gracie last summer, they enjoyed it v.much, esp' when some big guy punched him whilst on the mat.

Gracie's reply, 'if you want to do punching, we can do punching but remember, I do this for a living!' the big guy deided not to bother with punching.

Normally much of everything, mainly JKD but that involves dipping into thai, savate, shooto, Kali and boxing.
however, due to incredible Uni workload I haven't done much for a couple of months.
Going back in next week. It is going to hurt, in more ways than one!

Yeah I can imagine. I stopped karate when I had to go abroad for 6 months and never got back into it. Never forget the reaction after I failed my black, went back the next week and no one who had passed did.

I got a hard session that night, but when the other people who did the grading did reappear they weren't given much respect.

I should really go back to it though. It was such a big part of my life for so long it would probably do me some good.

The guy that runs my kickboxing club used to compete in UFC, I'm too chicken to get in the ring for kickboxing... let alone UFC

UFC's great, I bought UFC 1 and 2 when they first came out years ago. In one of them Royce is up against some JKD expert and has him in an armbar by the cage...the commentary goes something like 'and Royce has got him and if keeps up the pressure on that arm it's gonna...whoa there it goes, he broke his arm' nice.

He's a dangerous man Royce Gracie. Ken Shamrock is also a pretty serious fighter. Before Christmas I saw him fighting and getting a total beating, but he just kept going. I've seen some spirited fighting, but he was amazing. Probably the strongest display of spirit I've seen.

Did you see the UFC fight a few weeks back that was stopped by the ref, when they showed the slow motion replay you could see the guys arm break and he still didn't tap
I used to do Judo and Ju-Jitsu but what amazes me is the way the K1 and UFC guys take kicks to the legs
they effin hurt, takes some conditioning for that.

I didn't see that fight, but I'm not completely surprised. These guys will be so full of adrenaline and so well conditioned they probably dont feel a lot of the hits. Whats more, I think the will to win stops them from giving up.

I remember hearing about the Japan Karate Association championship many year ago where a guy called Kanazawa broke his arm in the semifinal. He insisted on continuing and IIRC went on to win the tital. In his style, Spirit is everything so he wanted to keep going whatever happened.

It's testament to how much a person can really take.
