As I am called Jo and was at school in the 80's, yes I do remember him, can't say it necessarily a fond memory though! I have a couple of friends who still refer to me as Joey!

Joey and Blue Peter changed the language of a generation!

He was a Hero when I was at school, Even Ernie, the guy who would translate for him was a alugh too.
We still talk about JOEY at work or even down the pub

When he died most of us lads at school wore black armbands. The teachers couldn't suss out what was going on.

We call our 11 year old daughter a Joey when she's doing something particularly...um...daft. Once we'd explained to her why, she's now calling her friends Joey and Spazzy!

So a whole new generation begins appreciating Mr Deacon in it's own inimitable way!

Edited to add that she hasn't only got two friends, one called Joey and the other called Spazzy! It just looked that way when I read it back!

when i was reading through the site all the memories of my pre-p.c primary school at break time came flooding back. iirc i was about 8 or 9 when the great deacon and his translator mate,ernie were converting a whole country of kids into 'deaconism',i also remember the times that we held 'bring and buy' sales in ade of joey at christ church in uxbridge...and like many of the people who remember him i still call people a "joey" and then push my bottom lip out with my tongue and go "nnnnnnnnnuuuuuuuuuurrrrrggggghhhh" when i think they have done something totally spanner-esque.

the emails from people to the site are class and the d.i.s.c.o song was a long-forgotten jem,i'll never be able to listen to it again now without remembering that version and pishing myself with laughter.

does anyone think that there will ever be another person who can change an entire generation of schoolkids into total pish-taking little f***ers in the same way that joey and blue peter (inadvertantly) did?.....personally i dont think so.
