I have sold loads of items on ebay, any problems I have had have been with the buyers. No matter where you go you will always have problems dealing with dipsticks.
The more people that attend any auction the bigger the chance you have of getting more for your item. There is nobody bigger than ebay, nor is there ever likely to be in the future. They have it sewn up.

There must surely be a place for a simply buying-and-selling-stuff site, like free-ad newspapers, for people who want to, er, buy and sell stuff, at an advertised price, without going through all that auction bollox.
eBay 'Buy it Now:
Free papers are read by tramps. Newsagent windows are read by gossipy housewives from a 2 mile radius. Mind you I did sell a second-hand toilet that way....

The difference is I would not have had the front to advertise at some of the prices I got for items on ebay. They sold for more than they were worth, I got paid, ebay got their bit, everyone's a winner.
