Earthquake - Tsunami Warning

Sky News reporting an earthquake of 8.5 on the Richter scale, same place as before.

Yep 8.2 on richter scale near Sumatra, that will be a very big loss of life again

More or less completely ignored last time was the fact that the tsunami happened at low tide.
This one is closer to high spring tide which would be bad news if a tsunami follws.

Midnight local time was about 2 hours ago. Didn't it take about 3 hours for the Tsunami to hit last time.

There was one in the same area about 5 years ago but not as big as these two.

Hope they get people moved just in case. I wouldn't be surprised if there are still a couple more to come over the next few months.

Yes, 3 hours, and latest reports say there is tsunami activity about to hit many of the same locations as before...hope they're wrong.

Just heard from a friend in Malaysia - they've been moved away from the coast for the next 36 hours as a precaution, but no signs of any big waves - apparently unlikely this long after the quake.

Bet they hate Bank Holidays.

Depends on where the epicentre is. I think it was a lot less last time on reaching first landfall.

Don't forget the Richter scale is logarithmic, so 8 is a tenth of the strength of 9 etc. They were predicting another quake only last week.

They've just revised it and said it was 8.7 this time compared with 9 last time. Either way it's still a lot of shaking.

Remember that earthquakes don’t cause tsunami’s, according to my Geotechnical engineering tutor they are usually caused by the resultant undersea land slides.
