Hi, I would appreciate some medical advice. I've been suffering from flu like symptoms for the last four days; fever, headache, aching joints, some diarhea (sp?) but no vomitting and a sore throat. I've treated it by taking paracetomol and going to bed, but the fever 38/39deg only lapses for a couple of hours at a time. I've stopped taking the paracetomol regularly, as I did not want to exceed the total dosage. Mrs Piper has been to the pharmacy and got me some Nurofen which I beleive I can alternate with the paracetomol. Is there any point in my visiting my GP? I'm a slightly lardy 40 year old normally in very good health, no heart or breathing problems.
Any advice would be appreciated.
BTW my four year old daughter had the exact same virus / symptoms last week. It took four days of treating with Calpol alternating with Nurofen to get her temperature back to normal. GP checked her two days into it and told us to carry on with the regime.

I'm not a Doctor (not a medical doctor anyway) but i'd be tempted to go to your GP in the next couple of days just to be on the safe side. It seems likely that you've contracted the same (probably) viral infection your daughter had. My undergrad virology days are long in the past now but iirc the influenza viral symptoms last between 4 and 7 days but you may suffer from milder symptoms for up to 2 weeks. If the calpol/ibuprofen treatment eased your daughter symptoms they'll work for you as well. If you feel anyworse or notice any other symptoms get to your GP.

If your 4 year old managed to get through it with Paracetamol and Ibuprofen, I'm sure a big strapping fella like you will do the same!
I don't think you'll get much from your GP, except a pained expression, and "It's a virus".
Manage it yourself - it's a virus - but watch out for secondary symptoms which could mean a bit of tonsillitis or other infection.

Srebe64 Thanks for the diagnosis! It was actually the duration I was concerned about. You won't feel so smug if I'm dead by the weekend.
Nubbin, I suspected my GP would just look at me disdainfully and send me home. Also, my four year old regularly puts me to shame. Should I also watch endles hours of Cbeebies? It worked for her.

Nubbin, I suspected my GP would just look at me disdainfully and send me home. Also, my four year old regularly puts me to shame. Should I also watch endles hours of Cbeebies? It worked for her.

Anyone with shares in Strepsils is onto a winner right now!
Sounds like the same virus going round our office (temp, very sore throat, headache, earache) - I had it last week, two of my managers off with it this week and countless other staff down with it.
It's lasting about 5-7 days generally, either that or they're stringing it out a bit!

Until a doc comes along, all the above advice on paracetamol/Ibuprofen is spot on. Use cool baths and/or cold flannels under the armpits to keep your temperature under control.
Now if you were a woman, you could be having your period while ice skating up Everest at the same time as a dose of the flu. Wimp

Paracetamol/ibuprofen advice sounds pretty good to me... you'll feel better in a couple of days...

It's what us medics call a 'flu like illness' - real flu you couldn't drag yourself to the computer.
I think you've made your diagnosis and treatment plan OK on your own.
Probably best to stick to either paracetamol OR ibuprofen, I always take the maximum dose regulkarly whether I've got fever or pain when I have 'man flu' and drink plenty of fluids.
Take it you do not have the same hobby as me Canoeing but if you did you would need to be aware of Weils it can kill even in some cases and starts with flu like symptons.
Also I doubt you have flu as you would not be able to stand and play one the net my guess is a bad cold virus not much fun but not really as serious as influensia.
