Metal detectors at the beach

I've got a home on the south coast and, over the years, I've developed a loathing of people that walk around the beach with metal-detectors looking for money/jewellery etc, at the end of a sunny day. I think such people are making a profit out of other peoples' losses and, in fact, are acting illegally - because it should be handed into the police.
Anyway, I'm seriously tempted to spend a tenner on a load of tiny ball-bearings and, at the end of the Easter Bank holiday for example, gently spread them across the sand to make life a misery for these leaches.

Very funny....but they aren't really looking to make money I don't think.
It's a hobby, and a pretty harmless one. Sometimes thee guys even find really important historical material or treasure.
Don't be an old misery - let them do their thing and just have a quiet laugh behind your pint.

Nah, there are a lot who do it for fun but just as many who do it to find the coins, watches, etc people have dropped. Seen them doing it myself.
Like the idea about the ball bearings though.
The 'real' detectors have equipment that is good enough to tell you what is beneath the surface, what type of metal it is, how deep and some even give you a visual clue as to the shape of what lies beneath!

Whats the problem the items concerned are lost and this way someone will have some use for them.

Fair dinkum if they're looking for historical materials - but the last place you'll find such is on the beach.
Well.....The original Crown Jewels are supposed to be somewhere under the sands of The Wash in Norfolk...

(I have the hilarious mental image of you furtively running around the dunes with a bag of ball bearings in the early morning muttering "Now lets see what those metal detecting b*stards make of this"

I've reached that stage in life where I'm sick to death of people making a living out of other peoples' misery and misfortune. People like:
The Inland Revenue - every single one of them (even the nice ones).
Certain lawyers.
Politicians who try and buy off Joe Public with a one-off gesture.
Local Government, who don't do anything.
Gypsies who thieve and litter.
Mindless vandals and muggers.
But above all:
People who use metal detectors for the express reason of finding inncocent peoples' money and jewellery.

if the original owners are never going to find it again, who are they actually hurting?
In your list of worthy bottomfeeders, the detector users are hardly causing representative amounts of misery

Yes Agreed-they are a somewhat bizarre target.
Why don't you put the ball bearings to a better use-Get an airgun and take pot shots at Lentilist councillors
