Just checking prices for London to Lyon in May:

Price per person: £ 52
Total incl. of tax: £ 129.00

This is the KLM price via Amsterdam!

I know its 4 flights - but does anyone think the tax is a little excessive?

Thats because you are paying Airport Tax in the UK, Holland and France.

If you got a direct flight there would be less tax.

Tax is fixed and if you think its bad to the EU it is double to non EU countries. The real scam however is with fuel surcharges and other airline imposed charges. These are imposed to make up the bottom line and as such should be part of the price. In many countries (inc US and Oz) it is allegal to have carrier imposed charges as extras so at least you can accurately compare fares.
