BT At It Again - Voting With My Feet.

Anyone else get an email from BT at 3pm today telling you unless you sign up for
a £1.50 a month email account with BT, as of 6am tomorrow you can no longer
use your BT broadband connection to send email?

Already paying top $ by using BT and I get 15 hours notice that they want more

the reaction at technical support, every call has been like mine.

Your loss BT, not mine...but come to think of it, they just raised millions

This is how it started.
Thought it was a hoax, so called them to be told I had to pay or loose my
outgoing mail server in 15 hours.

Dear Sir or Madam,

Your email address has been used to send unauthenticated email through BT mail servers. If you are a BT customer you must take action by 6.00am on 22nd March 2005 if you wish to continue to use BT mail servers.

If you are BT Yahoo! Internet customer
Please make a simple change: switch on 'SMTP authentication'. This is usually done by ticking a box called 'My server requires authentication' in your email program settings.

Please do this for all the BT Yahoo! email addresses used by you and your family.

Well who's email address HASN'T been used by these spammers.

All for cracking down on these things, but the period of notice and demand of money,
no matter how small is not on.

I've not had an email like that but I don't have a BT email or use their email servers..............thank god, by the sounds of things.

It's mad what they have done with the Broadband connections though. You bought a 512k line and had no problems with bandwidth over a month but upgrading everyone to 1 or 2mb lines and then limiting bandwidth to only 15gb a month means with faster downloads what you did in a month will now take less than half, so people may hit the 15gb limit early.

Hell to them Nildram off the same connection speeds with a 50gb monthly limit and similar costs and easy switch. I'll probably go with them or a similar deal soon anyway.

is this the whole mail? it doesn't ay what "action" you must take to save your email address.

No, not the full email.

It was very vague, didn't tell you where to go to get the 'Premium' email
account nor what to do when you had.

Lot's of wasted time on the phone and no PR favours for BT.

Hummm, I've had nothing.

I've got a 1MB connection and have had since day 1.

I did get a load of mails ages ago about changing setting for SMTP authentication - but no costs associated with that.

Do you run your own e-mail account not with BT? Or with BT? BIZARRE!

We run our own e-mail server down the end of a BT Broadband connection - and we certainly haven't been contacted!

Seems "scammy" to me...

I've just signed for a 1 meg unlimited connection with talktalk. £14.99 a month. Not bad considering I was paying £24 a month for 512kbps from eclipse.

I've gone from 512Kb to 1M and now to 2M with BT. For internet use it's not noticeably different, although file downloads are a lot quicker, but in practice I don't do much downloading.

Hmmm, I'm actually thinking of switching away from Nildram for a similar reason - I was quite happy paying for a 1Mb connection with no download limit. They've now said they're going to up it to 2Gb but put a cap on it - and as I use my connection primarily for VPN that's going to cost.
