I had a bit of an accident with a butane gas can on Saturday whilst fitting it to a blow torch. Ended up with the seal failing and the gas in liquid form spraying everywhere and the canister froze to my hands!! I had to immerse the still leaking can in (tepid) water to un freeze it from my skin. Initially my fingers felt very bruised and stiff. Now most of my fingers are still numb and bruised feeling and have taken on a dull red colouring.The best way off describing the way they feel is as if they have been scalded. They are still warm so i assume its not too serious.
Is this a mild dose of 'frost bite?

any comments (apart from abuse for being a wally please)

I thought it was an irritant (no not Vixpy) if butane made contact with the skin... so possibly chemical burns?

sounds like chemical burns and butane has an irritant warning on the tin.

Skin will dry out... This is not advice BTW but maybe E45 moisturiser may assist in the healing as the skin will be irritated and dehydrated due to the chemicals.

Im sure a quack will advise accordingly.

Thanks for that, due to chemical abuse in my yoof (gloves are for mandy pandy whimps) my skin is very dry and prone to infection (dermatitis) so I do use a moisturiser daily (not a real man then!!)

I strongly advise against using butane as a hand cleanser!!

you really ought to see a doc about that as it could be frostbite and needs seeing to, anyway better safe than sorry

I rang the surgery today, I can have an appointment on thursday or go to A & E. I thought I'd see if any of the PH docs could advise. If it's still bad in a couple of days then I'll go see a pro!

the way i usually work it is to ring up and do some and demand an emergency appointment, i see it as i very rarely get ill so when i get ill i want to be seen to before i die

update on me pinkies!! Now they have taken on a pinky red hue, and the skin on my palms and fingers are shiny (butane car polish anyone?) the pain has gone, but I'm left with a tingling sensation all over my hands, not dissimilar to sunburn! I dont think there will be any lasting damage, so a visit to the vets will be un neccesary!!
