'Roadkill' sweets grind to a halt
US food giant Kraft has decided to halt production of sweets shaped like roadkill - animals run over by cars. Animal rights activists criticised the product, fruit-flavoured Trolli Roadkill Gummi candy, saying it encouraged acts of cruelty.
New Jersey's Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NJSPCA) had threatened petitions, boycotts and letter campaigns to stop the product.
Kraft is in the process of selling the Trolli brand to a rival company.
Chewing gum maker Wm. Wrigley Jr. Co is acquiring it, along with the Altoids and Life Savers, in a $1.48bn deal.
Trolli products are known for their quirkiness, and Roadkill - which came out last summer - includes sweets shaped like flattened snakes, chickens and squirrels with track marks on their bodies.
"This is not sending the right message to kids," NJSPCA spokesman Matthew Stanton told Reuters news agency.
Kraft said it would stop production as soon as possible and sell off remaining inventory.
"We understand how this product could be misinterpreted, and we respect that point of view," Trolli Brand Manager Jim Low said in a statement.

Not sure what to make of this one. I have a pretty sick sense of humour anyhow, so these appeal to me, but I can see how others could see it's perhaps slightly distasteful. But then again, no one is making them buy them, and I can hardly see kiddies going out and stealing their parents cars to run over animals after being unduly influenced by eating a packet...

In New Zealand they sell little pottery souvenirs of Polecats squished with tyre tracks on them with the title "Genuine New Zealand Roadkill" on them.
You only need to drive in NZ for a few days to understand why - the little buggers are everywhere - and pretty much everywhere they meet their doom courtesy of Bibendum.
Pah! Animal cruelty types seem to be mostly nutters these days. Shame - they're an important part of society's concience and its easy to "switch them off" when they spout bullshit.

Damn right. I saw a picture of these sweets and immediately went out into the road with a big hammer, found a cat and beat it to death.
Jeez.
Now, where's an animal rights activist...?
