I thought council tax rises were being kept down this year-because it is an election year and rises should be about 5%.
After the election now that is another matter-Council Tax is a favourite of Labour because it is the ultimate stealth tax-they can pin the blame on the councils. A good chunk of that 10bn or so hole in government finances will probably be filled with council tax.

I wish my council tax was £140 pa, unfortunately I don't live there I just saw it on the news. I'm just waiting until this evening when someone will be on moaning about paying the extra, I haven't thrown anything at the telly for a while

Its probably just for a particular portion of the bill, its usually split between county, police & local council so maybe the local council (which IIRC is the lowest proportion) is doubling.

in N Yorks last year. And it's due to go up by a similarly ridiculous amount this year. All to pay Gemini's bar bill.
Are you kidding me - try living in a long-term Labour stronghold like Glasgow where we're still paying for poll-tax dodging scum and absolute council corruption. I'll gladly swap my bill with its 5% rise for yours with its 100% rise.

£1,000 plus is mich more typical throughout the UK. To be honest, it's not really enough as it is. Councils are totally hamstrung by their ability to raise income locally. They depend on the government for 75% of their income.

And maintain the roads and maintain the street lighting and maintain the footpaths and fund the police, local schools, medical services, local food standards, restaurant health and safety checks, fire service etc etc etc.
Councils have an enormous amount of resonsibilities. Just look what has happened with the Sudan 1 food additive scare. Guess who the Food Standard Agency have tasked with making sure that the FSA dictats are obeyed - not the restaurants or supermarkets who sell the food, but the local councils. And it's the councils who will get it in the neck if these orders aren't carried out.

I'm not in North Yorkshire but that matters not. We had similar increases down here (Hants) over the last few years. I warn you don't look too deeply into it, it'll just wind you up
. The majority of the increases here were to future proof their pension fund at the publics expense. They got most of the money in one hit as they know it is unacceptable for joe public to continue to subsidised the generous and guaranteed pension they will draw for what is effectively very little outlay, a bit like MP's really . The rest of us mugs will just have to keep on working

In plain english; if you tried to make decent provision by way of a private pension, to stop you being a drain on the state, this bunch of theiving pikey kunts have put paid to that. Amazingly whilst managing to line their own and their friends pockets in the process
. I'm sorry for the police pensions funds, but I don't see my pension fund going out to to the public for a top up. If it needs to be topped up then the members do it IMHO.

Being a 'boy done good' from some of the roughest parts of south london I still retain a certain attitude that justice will be met out to those who fecked with you. Be it by the courts or one way or another but we tend to have long memories.
