FFS !
We can't have a minute's silence everytime there is a disaster. It isn't going to help anyone is it ?
It was an accident - these people were not heroes just unfortunate victims of a natural disaster.
The "minute's silence" should be kept for Rememberance Day and used as a mark of respect for those who died in the two World Wars.
So, whilst I feel pity for the victims I will not be observing the silence.

At work we normally hold such silences, an anouncement is sent over the tannoy to start and finish the silence. will find out if we are involved when i go into work tonight, and with that in mind i will hope to be silent @ midday tomorrow as i'm nights i'll try not to snore

Who has the scale for how many minutes silence is appropriate?

One for World Wars (millions lost, but hey, it's a long time ago )

Wasn't it two for 9/11?

So obviously need more for this tragic event?

When there is some catastrophy that takes quarter of a million lives, will that require 4 minutes?

Train load of people - 10 seconds?

Ah, yes, but you see, this has been decided on by our illustrious gvt, as they want to be in charge of our mourning, charitable donating etc etc, seeing as they have come severly unstuck because of the public's reaction to this.

Tony HAS to be in control.

My thoughts exactly.
Perhaps our beloved Government can design an equation to calculate the appropriate period of silence ?

((DeathsOfWesterners*100) plus DeathsOfNonWesterners) divided by YearsSinceDisaster equals MinutesOfSilence

Perhaps we should have a minutes silence for our current government, since they are a ongoing disaster.

Sending some money over is appropriate and practical, observing silence in this situation is OTT IMHO.

Blair did'nt see fit to break off his holiday early either!

Having expressed that I am fortunate in not experiencing the pain of bereavement due to this natural disaster.

I dont think my customers would appreciate us being silent for 3 minutes whilst waiting for their food. If i could, I would.

A minutes silence would have been very appropriate.

Typical stupid Labour twats call for 3 minutes in some sort of attempt make them look ultra sympathetic and more vote worthy.

Smells of Tessa Jowell or Darling.

A minutes silence as a 'one off' would have been a worthy gesture. but three minutes opens a can of worms with comparisons with the the war dead and so on. Very ill conceived idea.
